The first Halo Campaign Evolved patch will release next week. The update adds toggles for the remake’s film grain and chromatic aberration, stops Sgt. Johnson blocking mission progress, and makes Jackals stagger more reliably.

Halo Studios confirmed the changes through the Halo Support account on X, promising “additional stability improvements across multiple platforms” alongside the gameplay fixes. GameSpot first reported the update’s details.

What does the Halo Campaign Evolved patch fix?

The film grain and chromatic aberration toggles answer a complaint that has trailed the remake since launch, when even its original art director called the architecture “out of scale, no mystery, damn ugly”. Players can now turn both effects off for a cleaner image.

On the combat side, Jackals can be staggered more reliably when shots land on their hands and feet, as has always been the case in Halo. Sgt. Johnson no longer blocks mission progress — a change that mostly matters in the three new prequel missions, where he previously had to hack open doors before Master Chief could proceed. Marines and Flood Marines will also fire their assault rifles correctly with the Magnified Skull enabled.

The patch has a catch: downloading it wipes any mid-mission saved progress, though unlocked missions and rally points carry over. Issues players have reported since release — unresponsive enemy AI and cutscenes that lock up — are not mentioned in the preview; Halo Studios says the full patch notes will have more detail.

The patch lands as Halo Studios deals with a slow start: 1.2M copies in two weeks, outsold 16-to-1 by two Call of Duty ports. The game’s secret ending continues to tease a Halo 2 remake.
