Marcus Lehto, art director of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, has criticised the Halo: Campaign Evolved art direction — specifically its reimagined Forerunner architecture, the structures of the ancient race that built the rings.

Lehto posted his thoughts on X alongside a comparison of the ring’s exterior in the 2001 original and the Unreal Engine 5 remake, which launched on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on July 28. He is known as the father of Master Chief and co-creator of the Halo universe.

What Marcus Lehto says about the Halo: Campaign Evolved art direction

His objection is age. Forerunner tech, he wrote, was ancient before it was pretty:

“While Forerunner tech was metal (not stone), it was also ancient, vast, alive, and a tomb to the horrors that lurked within. It had seen hundreds of millennia of conflict. Yet the game shows it as shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago.”

The main menu drew the harshest words:

The background drew a separate complaint. In the original, the ring sits far out on the fringe of the Milky Way, with the galaxy visible behind it; in the remake, that sky is empty. Lehto argued the change breaks the lore that placed Installation 04 at the galaxy’s edge.

His complaints do not extend to everything the remake changed. He agreed with followers that the Covenant and Flood aesthetics “felt wonderful throughout”, and days earlier had called the upgrades brilliant — movement, cinematics, visuals, lighting — with gripes “taking a back seat to the fun”.

The Halo: Campaign Evolved art direction debate is the latest round of a familiar argument about remakes: how much of the original’s feel should survive the technical upgrade. The remake has sold 1.2 million copies since launch, so the argument is not hurting it. Halo Studios has not responded publicly; the ring will presumably stay shiny for now. Campaign Evolved is out now, including day one on Game Pass.

Who is Marcus Lehto?

He was art director on the original Halo: Combat Evolved at Bungie and is widely credited as the designer of Master Chief and co-creator of the Halo universe.

What is Forerunner architecture in Halo?

The Forerunners are the ancient alien civilisation that built the Halo rings and much of the technology seen across the series. In the original game their structures were meant to feel ancient and unknowable; Lehto’s complaint is that the remake makes them look newly manufactured.

Has Halo Studios responded to the criticism?

Not publicly at the time of writing. The studio has not commented on Lehto’s posts, and it is reportedly already working on Halo 2 and 3 remakes in Unreal Engine.
