Halo: Campaign Evolved has sold around 1.2M copies since its 28 July launch, according to estimates from analytics firm Alinea Analytics — a quiet start for the first Halo game ever released on a PlayStation.
The split is roughly 42% Xbox (console and PC), 41% PlayStation and 17% Steam, for about $67M in gross revenue. The game also launched into Game Pass, where another 2.1M players joined through the subscription; just under 600K paid $20 extra for up to five days of early access.

On Steam, the biggest competitor was another Halo
Steam accounted for 232K copies and $9.3M. The Master Chief Collection — six games with multiplayer included — costs $40, against $50 for the remake’s campaign, bonus missions and visual polish, and it has sold 8.5M copies on Steam alone, per Alinea’s estimates. The audience overlap shows who bought the remake: around 80% of its Steam buyers had already played the collection on Steam, 64% had played Halo Infinite and 16% Halo Wars.
“The price is too high for a port like this one, and the Halo brand – candidly – has lost a lot of cache,” wrote Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea. “A lot of Steam users already own Master Chief Collection – 8.5 million copies sold on Steam, as per our estimates – which offers more content for less.”
Review sentiment, per Alinea, lands on the same three points: the price, a thin value proposition with no competitive multiplayer, and an audience that already owned more Halo for less. The visual overhaul drew praise; the verdict was blunt — “good doesn’t cut it in the current market, especially priced against a cheaper, meatier version of itself.”
The first Halo on PlayStation found nostalgia, not new players
On PS5, Campaign Evolved is estimated at 544K copies and $32M — a touch under the Xbox figure despite the platform’s larger install base. Alinea’s data shows the buyers skew 32-to-40: players who grew up on Halo in the Xbox 360 era, many of whom moved to PlayStation after the Xbox One launch. The top audience overlaps are Gears of War Reloaded, Doom: The Dark Ages and Metal Gear Solid Delta — shooters, remakes and legacy titles, not a fresh crowd. Halo’s future on PlayStation is under review as Xbox evaluates the franchise.
Two 15-year-old Call of Duty ports put the numbers in perspective
Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 1 — 1080p ports, not remakes — have sold a combined 12M-plus copies on PS5: 8.9M and 3.3M respectively. Black Ops 2 alone has generated $351M on the platform in just over a month, nearly ten times what the Steam version has made since 2012. At a lower price and with worse graphics, the two ports outsold the Halo remake by more than 16-to-1.
The difference is PvP. Just 21.7% of Black Ops 2 players on PS5 have started the campaign, while the Halo remake shipped without competitive multiplayer at all — a franchise built on split-screen and LAN parties. Elliott’s assessment: a Master Chief Collection release on PS5 “would certainly have done far better”, and the rumoured Halo 2 remake, whose secret ending revived those rumours, “will sell a great deal more” if it ships with online multiplayer — “assuming it comes to PlayStation at all”.
In the UAE, the value gap shows up on the storefronts: Campaign Evolved is AED 199 on the Steam store, against AED 149 for the Master Chief Collection. The same Alinea report charted how the new Spider-Man film pushed another 335K copies of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — the lift we covered separately.

How many copies has Halo: Campaign Evolved sold?
Around 1.2M in its first two weeks, per Alinea Analytics estimates: 42% on Xbox (console and PC), 41% on PlayStation and 17% on Steam, for roughly $67M in gross revenue. A further 2.1M players joined through Game Pass.
Why did Halo: Campaign Evolved underperform?
Alinea points to three factors: the $50 price against the $40 Master Chief Collection, which bundles six games and multiplayer; the remake’s lack of competitive multiplayer; and an audience that largely already owned the older collection — 80% of its Steam buyers had played it.
Will the Master Chief Collection come to PlayStation?
Xbox has not announced it. Alinea’s Rhys Elliott argues it ‘would certainly have done far better’ than the campaign-only remake on PS5, and that a rumoured Halo 2 remake with online multiplayer would sell considerably more — ‘assuming it comes to PlayStation at all’.
