A movie just sold 316,000 extra copies of a three-year-old Spider-Man game

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold roughly 316,000 more copies after Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit cinemas — its biggest sales bump in years. Here's what the numbers show.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold roughly 316,000 extra copies — about $11 million worth — since Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached cinemas, according to new sales estimates from analytics firm Alinea Analytics, reported by GameSpot. Three years after launch, it is the biggest sales bump the Insomniac game has recorded in years.

Alinea’s data puts the game at 18.2 million lifetime sales — 92 per cent of them on PS5 — and more than $1.2 billion in revenue. Around 20 per cent of the post-release copies were physical, and another 274,000 players joined through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog’s Extra and Premium tiers.

Why Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is selling again

The bump is mostly the film, not the discount. Alinea’s head of market analysis, Rhys Elliot, said as much on X:

“While some smart discounts had an impact, hype around the movie did most of the work here, as shown by the pricing data in our platform.”

The two productions were built to feed each other. Brand New Day’s fight scenes started from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 screenshots, Tom Holland has said the games set the bar for the symbiote suit, and Insomniac marked the release with the film’s “Fresh Start” costume and a PSSR upgrade for PS5 Pro — the free update we covered when it landed.

The player spike had already shown up around release weekend, when all three Insomniac Spider-Man games hit multi-year Steam highs, as we noted at the time.

Can a movie sell a game twice?

These lifts “happen mostly by accident”, Elliot argues — matching a film and a game’s production cycles is a logistical nightmare. He would still like someone to try:

“But for the handful of publishers making movies AND games in the same IP, surely one of these has to line up. I’d kill to see that impact.”

The film driving the bump also set a regional record. Brand New Day’s opening weekend was the biggest in Middle East history — $18.4 million across the region, per Empire, Sony’s exclusive theatrical distributor there — with the UAE contributing $7.4 million, its largest market in the region, Variety reports.

The game is on the UAE PlayStation Store and Steam; on Steam UAE, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is listed at AED 239.

Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 available on PS4?

No — the game runs on PS5 and PC only. The earlier Insomniac titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales, also play on PS4.

Does Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 have Spider-Man: Brand New Day content?

Insomniac added the film’s “Fresh Start” costume and a PSSR upgrade for PS5 Pro when the film released. The movie returned the favour — its fight scenes were built from the game’s screenshots and finishing moves.
