Activision is reportedly considering a Halo reboot, potentially with a Master Chief origin story, but the direction remains unconfirmed. The claims come from Halo reporter Rebs Gaming’s October 1 video, which Eurogamer summarises and which is available at its original source. Microsoft’s September 22 statement confirms that Activision is making the next Halo title, but says nothing about a reboot, Sledgehammer Games or the game’s engine.

What the Halo reboot report claims
Rebs says the same anonymous source who previously supplied information about Halo: Campaign Evolved told him Activision first proposed separate free-to-play multiplayer and campaign projects. Sledgehammer Games reportedly prototyped basic mechanics, including player movement, for the concepts. Those prototypes were said to use the Infinity Ward engine, but that does not establish which technology the final game will use.
The original campaign pitch was reportedly a soft reboot: it would move away from Halo Infinite’s story without erasing established canon. Rebs says those proposals were later discarded in favour of a full Halo game. His source now says Activision is considering a complete reboot, potentially an origin story for Master Chief. The Halo reboot speculation is still based on second-hand reporting about a project in very early development, not a settled story plan.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the next Halo game
Microsoft’s statement says Activision will develop the next Halo title with a new team separate from ongoing Call of Duty work. A smaller group at Halo Studios will continue supporting existing Halo games and their community. Our report on the Xbox restructuring covered the confirmed handover.
The assignment is the confirmed foundation; the reboot, Sledgehammer’s role, the engine and the campaign’s story all remain claims attributed to Rebs Gaming’s source. Our earlier Halo: Campaign Evolved development report is separate coverage, not confirmation of this project’s direction. Microsoft has not announced a title, release window, platform list or story details for the next game.
Could a soft reboot preserve Halo’s earlier canon?
Possibly: the early idea Rebs Gaming described would have moved away from Halo Infinite’s plot while retaining established canon, but his later update says the proposal changed. His report does not establish what Activision will ship.
Does an Infinity Ward engine prototype confirm which engine the next Halo will use?
No. Rebs says the early prototypes used that engine; a prototype does not determine the final game’s technology, and Microsoft’s announcement does not name an engine.
