A former Rockstar North technical director thinks the fear of AI-converted PS5 builds could push Rockstar to shorten the usual wait for a PC version of GTA 6. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Obbe Vermeij, who left the studio in 2009, said he wouldn’t be surprised if Rockstar tried to move the releases closer together. GTA 6 launches on 19 November for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has yet to announce a PC version.
Why Vermeij sees an AI port as a sales risk
As Dexerto reports, Vermeij’s argument is that generative AI has changed what a console-only window means. He said he’d be concerned, if he were Rockstar, that someone would take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC. He added that a port like that “won’t be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales.”
That’s where his timing theory comes from. Vermeij said he wouldn’t be surprised if there were “an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together”, then added that he doesn’t know what Rockstar is thinking. So this is one ex-employee’s reading of the incentives, not a leak or a sign of any change to the company’s plans.
An unofficial port wouldn’t be cheap
Vermeij doesn’t expect a quick job. In his estimate, converting a game this size would take many hours of machine time and probably cost tens of thousands of dollars in tokens, the usage units AI services charge for. He still thinks someone will try, because “if it’s GTA” people will take the shot.
Wccftech, which covered the same interview, adds its own context. The outlet reports that PlayStation is fighting jailbreakers with firmware changes meant to stop GTA 6 being dumped at launch. It also says that makes an unofficial PC build at launch unlikely. That reading belongs to Wccftech, not Vermeij, and it sits oddly with his view that the effort is only a matter of money and patience.
What’s official, and what isn’t
Rockstar’s track record favours a long gap. GTA 5 reached PC in 2015, about 18 months after its original console launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a year after its console release. The idea of a shorter wait for GTA 6 isn’t new either. We covered VGC commentary hinting at an earlier PC release in September, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has confirmed anything since.
Fan-made content is a separate issue that Rockstar has already addressed in its modding guidelines for GTA 6. Vermeij’s concern is about someone converting the console build, which those guidelines don’t cover. For PC players in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, nothing changes yet: the only official way to play from 19 November is on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Has Rockstar announced GTA 6 for PC?
No. Rockstar lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the 19 November launch, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has given a PC date or window.
Who is Obbe Vermeij?
He’s a former technical director at Rockstar North who left the studio in 2009. He isn’t involved in GTA 6 and told Rock Paper Shotgun he doesn’t know what Rockstar is thinking.
Should I download an unofficial GTA 6 PC port if one appears?
We recommend against it. Rockstar hasn’t authorised any PC version, so an unofficial build would be unverified software with no support, and Vermeij himself expects such a port to be worse than an official one.
