God of War show recasts Atreus and Thrud as teenagers for Season 2

God of War's Prime Video series is recasting Atreus and Thrud for Season 2, with casting calls out for actors aged 14–17 to cover their jump in age.

Prime Video’s God of War series is recasting Atreus and Thrud for Season 2, with casting calls seeking older actors to cover the characters’ jump in age.

The listings, first reported by Mp1st and picked up by Video Games Chronicle, ask for actors aged 14–17 to play “Joshua” and “Ruth” — the codenames for Atreus and Thrud. Season 1’s casting looked for performers aged 9–12; Callum Vinson was set to play Atreus and Island Austin Thrud.

The Joshua description is unmistakably Atreus: raised in a cabin in the woods, bonded with his father on a dangerous adventure, and carrying “a revelation suggesting he may have a destiny greater than he could have imagined”. Applicants “must be comfortable with physical combat, especially archery”. Ruth, meanwhile, is “wise beyond her years”, confident and sarcastic, with a special connection to her grandfather the king — Odin — and a belief she will one day be heir to the throne. That is Thrud, Thor’s daughter, to the letter.

None of this is a surprise. Season 1’s casting call described “Joshua” as a one-year series regular, which hinted a different actor would step in once the show caught up with the events of God of War Ragnarök, which take place years later. Season 2, in other words, looks set to adapt Ragnarök directly — a more brisk structure than The Last of Us, which stretches a single game across multiple seasons.

Unlike the show’s Kratos situation, this recast was planned: Ryan Hurst tore his bicep on set in June and is being replaced after his recovery was judged to take up to a year. Four episodes had already been shot and will be reshot, with production expected to resume in October. Between the new Kratos and the reshoots, reports suggest the series — which we previously noted looked set for 2027 — could now premiere as late as 2028.

Where the God of War series will stream

The series is a Prime Video original, and Prime Video is available in the UAE, so it should stream here whenever it premieres. There is no release date for any region yet, and the production upheaval makes any estimate fragile.
