Google will tighten Gemini model limits on 9 October, restricting free app users to Flash-Lite and removing Pro from AI Plus later in the month. Free users also lose Flash on 9 October. AI Plus subscribers keep Flash and Flash-Lite but will lose Pro on an account-specific date sent by email.

The revised access map was reported by 9to5Google. Neowin also reports that AI Plus users will receive their Pro cut-off date by email, rather than losing it on the free-tier date.

Gemini model limits: who keeps Flash, Pro and Deep Think

Free accounts will have Flash-Lite only. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, but not Pro; AI Pro and AI Ultra retain Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. AI Pro also gains Deep Think, which had been limited to Ultra.

9to5Google lists US prices of $4.99 a month for AI Plus and $19.99 for AI Pro. After the change, AI Pro will be the lowest-priced plan with Gemini Pro access. Our Google AI plans guide for UAE users covers local subscription context.

Model access is separate from Gemini’s usage limits

These Gemini model limits change which models each plan can select, not the app’s underlying compute-based usage allowance. Google’s support page on Gemini model access and limits says usage refreshes every five hours until a weekly limit is reached, with prompt complexity, features and chat length affecting consumption. Pro and Deep Think are among the features that use more of that allowance.

Google’s model-access change follows its May move to compute-based limits. We previously explained how the same system affects Gemini Notebook usage limits.

Gemini effort settings may change in October

9to5Google also reports that Google is preparing low, medium and high effort settings for Gemini models. Higher effort is meant to produce more thorough responses, but would use more of a subscriber’s allowance. The report places the settings in October; Google has not given a separate rollout date.

Is Flash-Lite a like-for-like replacement for Gemini Pro?

No. Google’s model guide describes Flash-Lite as an efficient model for fast, everyday work, while Pro is aimed at more complex maths and coding. If you regularly need Pro, AI Pro or AI Ultra is required after your AI Plus access ends.

Does AI Pro get the same amount of Deep Think use as AI Ultra?

Google’s usage limits page does not give a separate AI Pro Deep Think allowance. It says Deep Think uses more compute, while AI Ultra receives a higher overall allowance than AI Pro. Access to the feature should not be read as unlimited or equal usage.
