Gears of War: E-Day Is Not Coming to PS5 at Launch

The Coalition’s upcoming prequel will launch on Xbox and PC this October, despite earlier rumours of a PlayStation 5 release.

Gears of War: E-Day Is Not Coming to PS5 at Launch

Microsoft has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6, 2026, as an Xbox console exclusive, putting an end to speculation that the game could also be released on PS5.

The release date and platform details were confirmed during the Xbox Game Showcase 2026, where Microsoft showed off a new trailer featuring a younger Marcus Fenix fighting through the earliest days of the Locust invasion. The game is also coming to PC, but there are currently no plans for a PS5 version.

Gears of War: E-Day Is Skipping PS5 at Launch

The absence of a PS5 version is notable because Microsoft has spent the past few years bringing an increasing number of its games to other platforms.

The Gears franchise itself made its PlayStation debut with Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered version of the original game that was released on PS5 alongside Xbox and PC. That move led to speculation that E-Day could also arrive on Sony’s console, although Microsoft had never officially announced a PlayStation version.

For now, E-Day appears to represent a more traditional approach for one of Xbox’s biggest franchises: the game will be available on Xbox consoles and PC, with no PS5 launch planned.

The New Trailer Shows Classic Gears Gameplay

The latest trailer opened with a ground-level look at the Locust invasion, as the creatures emerged into an urban environment filled with shops, streets and collapsing buildings.

While the setting is different, the gameplay shown looked immediately familiar. There was plenty of cover-based shooting, close-range brutality and the heavy, blood-soaked combat style that has defined the Gears series since its Xbox 360 debut.

E-Day is being developed by The Coalition and takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War. The story follows younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as they encounter the Locust Horde for the first time during Emergence Day, the event that reshaped the world of Sera.

The Coalition has previously described the game as an origin story rather than a spin-off, with a greater emphasis on the horror of the Locust invasion. Unlike later entries in the series, where the Locust have become familiar enemies, E-Day is designed to show them as an overwhelming and largely unknown threat.

Gears of War: E-Day Brings the Series Back to Its Roots

The new game was first announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024. Rather than continuing directly from the events of Gears 5, The Coalition chose to revisit one of the most important moments in the series’ history.

That approach gives the studio room to return to the darker tone of the earlier Gears games while also expanding on the relationship between Marcus and Dom before they became the hardened soldiers seen in the original trilogy.

The game is being built in Unreal Engine 5, with The Coalition previously promising substantial improvements to character detail, environments, lighting, destruction and animation technology compared to Gears 5.

Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6, 2026, for Xbox consoles and PC.
