Gears of War: E-Day Reportedly Has a Budget of More Than $400 Million

The reported figure, equivalent to approximately AED 1.47 billion, has not been confirmed by Microsoft and it is unclear whether it includes marketing or other costs.

Gears of War: E-Day Reportedly Has a Budget of More Than $400 Million

Gears of War: E-Day reportedly has a development budget of more than $400 million, potentially making the upcoming Xbox exclusive one of Microsoft's most expensive gaming projects to date.

The claim comes from Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson, who discussed the game during the latest episode of the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast. Henderson said he had heard that the budget for the upcoming Gears of War prequel was "upwards of $400 million".

Microsoft and developer The Coalition have not announced an official development budget for the game. The reported figure should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

It is unclear what the reported $400 million budget includes

There are also some important caveats surrounding the figure. It is not clear whether the reported amount covers development costs alone or includes additional expenses such as marketing, staff bonuses and other costs associated with bringing the game to market.

At the upper end of the estimate, $400 million is equivalent to approx AED 1.47 billion. A simple calculation suggests that the game would need to sell around 5.7 million copies at $70 each to generate $400 million in gross sales. However, that does not account for retailer or platform revenue shares, regional pricing, discounts, taxes or the role of Game Pass subscriptions.

The sales figure is therefore not a meaningful break-even target on its own, but it illustrates the scale of the investment if the reported budget is accurate.
