The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi is running a 12-week clinical study with Eight Sleep to test whether AI-powered smart beds can help manage sleep apnoea. It is the first study to connect the company’s consumer sleep data with Abu Dhabi’s population health records.
Participants sleep on the Pod, Eight Sleep’s sensor-lined bed cover, at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City. The hardware captures heart rate, breathing rate, movement, snoring and body position continuously, and can adjust the bed’s angle in real time. That data flows into Abu Dhabi’s intelligent health system, where researchers read it alongside participants’ clinical, genomic and lifestyle records.

The condition affects nearly one billion people globally and is linked to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Symptoms build gradually and vary night to night, which is the argument for continuous monitoring over a single night in a sleep lab.

Franceschetti’s company gets something real out of this: a research partnership with a government health system, and a chance to position an expensive consumer gadget as preventive medicine. The Department of Health gets real-world data from a device people actually sleep on. It is a fair point, and it is also a product pitch.
DoH and Eight Sleep plan to extend the work beyond apnoea to menopause and cancer care, where sleep and temperature data may matter most.

Can I take part in the Abu Dhabi sleep apnoea study?
Recruitment details have not been announced yet. The 12-week clinical study is being run by Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City with governance and data-protection protocols, so enquiries about participation would go through the hospital rather than Eight Sleep.
Does an Eight Sleep Pod diagnose sleep apnoea?
No. The Pod tracks signals associated with sleep apnoea, such as snoring, breathing rate and sleep interruptions, but a diagnosis still requires clinical assessment. The Abu Dhabi study is examining whether that continuous consumer data can support management and earlier detection alongside formal care.
