The World of Warcraft Forever beta response is already being described inside Blizzard as the craziest the developer has seen in 17 years, after the test opened to queues, disconnects and heavy lag. The game launches globally on 4 November, with the beta running through 21 October.
The response is not an official player-count record. Eurogamer reports the assessment from Blizzard developer Tom Ellis, who also explained that the beta environment was not built like a production stack and initially ran on one regional server. He said the setup was overwhelmed after players made it through Battle.net’s login rate limits.
World of Warcraft Forever beta hit a test environment built for less traffic
Ellis described the test infrastructure as a beta PTR environment rather than a production system. The first problem appeared when players reached the login queue, followed by disconnections that took the team about half an hour to identify, according to his account shared on X and quoted by Eurogamer.
Blizzard’s official beta guide says the World of Warcraft Forever beta begins with a level cap of 20, rising to 30 later. New players can opt in, while the Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection include beta access. The beta is due to close on 21 October, ahead of launch on 4 November.

What World of Warcraft: Forever includes at launch
World of Warcraft: Forever is being positioned as a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW. Blizzard says it returns players to the original continents, with progression to level 60, new stories and regular updates. Access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time; optional upgrade editions add cosmetics, the Skyborne race and other extras.
That puts the beta’s infrastructure trouble in the category of an early capacity problem, not a confirmed launch failure. Blizzard has not published a total for beta players, so the strongest available measure is the developer’s description of the response and the visible strain on the test servers.
For more background, Blizzard’s 2026 preview outlined what was next for WoW, Overwatch and Diablo. The current beta details are in Blizzard’s official test guide, while Eurogamer’s report carries Ellis’s comments and links to his X post.
