What Is The Last of Us About?

Created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us adapts the Naughty Dog games into a prestige TV drama. 

• Season 1 (2023) follows Joel and Ellie on a dangerous road trip across a ruined United States 20 years after a cordyceps fungus outbreak destroys civilisation. Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, only to discover she’s immune – and may be the key to a cure. 
• Season 2 (2025) jumps ahead about five years and begins adapting The Last of Us Part II. It explores Ellie’s life in Jackson, new relationships, and a brutal chain of events that push her into a cycle of revenge, while introducing Abby and new factions in Seattle. 

The show is known for:

• Incredible music by Gustavo Santaolalla (who also scored the games)

The narrative is very linear and character-driven; don’t skip ahead or start with Season 2:

• Season 1 covers the first game + Left Behind DLC.
• Season 2 begins Part II and assumes you know what Joel and Ellie went through before. 

If you want a smoother watch:

• Take a breather between Season 1 and Season 2 – the tone gets darker, and the time jump is intentional.

Is The Last of Us Kid-Friendly?

Short answer: no. This is very much an adults-only series.

On OSN+ and Apple TV it’s rated 18+. 

Expect:

• Graphic violence and intense action
• Disturbing infected creatures and body horror
• Strong language
• Themes of loss, trauma, torture, suicide and moral compromise
