Steve Carell playing a pulp fiction author who moves onto a college campus to help his daughter through a messy divorce, created by the guy who made Ted Lasso and Scrubs? That’s not a show — that’s a guaranteed Emmy nomination. Rooster just debuted on HBO and it’s already sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s how to watch it in the UAE.

What Is Rooster About?

Greg Russo (Steve Carell) is a famous pulp fiction author best known for his beach-read novels featuring a character called “Rooster.” When his own marriage falls apart, he takes a writer-in-residence position at Ludlow College — a fancy liberal arts school where his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) works as an art history professor.

The problem? Katie’s life is imploding. Her husband Archie (Phil Dunster, a.k.a. Jamie Tartt from Ted Lasso) has left her for a graduate student, and Katie is not handling it well. How not well? She burned down the faculty house (“it was an accident”) and assaulted a professor. Greg shows up thinking he can help. He cannot. But watching him try is extremely funny.

Created by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Scrubs, Shrinking) and Matt Tarses (Scrubs), the show has that signature Lawrence blend of comedy that’s laugh-out-loud funny but quietly devastating when it wants to be. It was filmed at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, standing in for a fictional East Coast college. The extras had to wear autumn clothing in 37°C heat, which is basically a UAE summer costume rehearsal.

Bill Lawrence reuniting with John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox from Scrubs) is fan service of the highest order. And Phil Dunster going from lovable reformed footballer in Ted Lasso to Katie’s cheating husband here is the kind of against-type casting that keeps things interesting. Carell also executive produces.

What to Watch After Rooster

If you’re enjoying Rooster’s blend of campus comedy and family drama, try these:

  • Shrinking (Apple TV+) — Another Bill Lawrence joint starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. Same energy: funny on the surface, emotionally devastating underneath.
  • The White Lotus (OSN+) — If you like watching privileged people behave badly in beautiful settings. Different tone, same addictiveness.
  • Bridgerton (Netflix) — For the romance angle with a completely different vibe. All 4 seasons streaming in the UAE.

Is Rooster Kid-Friendly?

No. The show carries a TV-MA rating.

Content includes strong language throughout, sexual content and references (Archie leaving Katie for a grad student is a recurring theme), alcohol use, emotional distress, and adult relationship dynamics. It’s a comedy, but it’s an HBO comedy — the humour is sharp and the subject matter is firmly adult.

Recommended for ages 16+. Older teens who enjoyed Ted Lasso might appreciate the Bill Lawrence tone, but the content is more mature.
