What Is Enlightened About?

Created by Mike White (The White Lotus) and Laura Dern, Enlightened is a half-hour comedy-drama about burnout, spiritual awakenings and corporate rot. 

• Amy Jellicoe is a self-destructive executive at Abaddonn Industries who suffers a humiliating meltdown at work. 
• After a stay at a holistic rehab centre in Hawaii, she returns to California full of meditation, self-help language and big ideas about “change”. 
• Instead of getting her old job back, she’s demoted to a basement data department full of misfits, where she slowly uncovers corporate corruption and considers becoming a whistleblower. 

The show balances awkward comedy with sincere, sometimes painful introspection. Amy can be inspiring and insufferable in the same scene, which is part of why critics called the series one of HBO’s most quietly brilliant comedies of the 2010s. 

Laura Dern won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for the role, and the series itself was Golden Globe-nominated.
