What Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms About?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a prequel to Game of Thrones, adapting George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.
- Set around 90–100 years before Game of Thrones and about 70 years after House of the Dragon.
- Follows Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey), an orphaned, lowborn hedge knight, and his mysterious young squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) – secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen.
- The Targaryens still rule, dragons are “not yet forgotten”, and the pair wander from tourney to tourney looking for work, honour and a bit of food.
Tonally, it’s lighter and more character-driven than Game of Thrones:
- Smaller, more personal stakes: jousts, feuds, local injustices rather than continent-wide war.
- Still has Westerosi violence, scheming and Targaryen family drama (including volatile prince Aerion “Brightflame”), but with more humour and warmth in the central Dunk & Egg relationship.
If Game of Thrones was about great houses and wars, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is more about chivalry, loyalty and unlikely friendship on the road.
Release Date & Episode Schedule (UAE & GCC)
- HBO / Max US premiere: January 18, 2026
- OSN+ MENA streaming start: January 19, 2026
Season 1 is a six-episode run. HBO’s weekly schedule is:
- Episode 1 – “The Hedge Knight” – January 18 (US)
- Episode 2 – “Hard Salt Beef” – January 25
- Episodes 3–6 – weekly through February
On OSN+, you can expect one new episode each week from January 19 onwards, following close behind the US broadcast (with the usual regional time-zone offset).
How Many Seasons & Episodes Will There Be?
As of now:
- Season 1: 6 episodes, ~30–40 minutes each.
- Season 2: Already renewed ahead of the premiere, planned to adapt the second Dunk & Egg novella The Sworn Sword and expected around 2027.
So you’re not starting another endless fantasy show – this is a more compact series with a clear roadmap.
Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Kid-Friendly?
Short answer: not really – this is still Westeros.
Even though reviews describe it as more playful and character-focused than Game of Thrones, they still note familiar elements:
- Violence: jousts, swordfights, injuries, executions.
- Adult themes: politics, class, prejudice, trauma.
- Occasional bawdy humour and innuendo typical of Westeros.
OSN+ hasn’t publicly listed the final age rating yet, but based on HBO’s usual standards and early reviews, you should expect something in the 15+ or 18+ range.
- Not suitable for young kids.
- Teens used to Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon levels of content should find this slightly gentler but still mature.
Should You Watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
Watch it if…
- You loved Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon but want something a bit more intimate and character-focused, with less sprawling politics.
- You’re curious about earlier Targaryen history and names like Aerion, Baelor “Breakspear”, Maekar and young Aegon.
- You like buddy adventures and underdog knights more than grand lords and queens.
- You already have (or are considering) OSN+ for other HBO series like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Wire, The White Lotus or The Last of Us.
Skip it if…
- You bounced off Game of Thrones because of the violence or tone – this is gentler, but still recognisably Westeros.
- You only want closed-ended stories; while Season 1 is self-contained, the overall Dunk & Egg saga is planned to span multiple seasons.
- You’re looking for lighter, family viewing – you’re better off on Disney+ or the kid-friendly side of Netflix.
More to Watch on OSN+ if You’re in a Westeros Mood
Once you’re done with Dunk & Egg, there’s a lot more premium drama waiting on OSN+ in the UAE and GCC:
- Industry – Season 4 – ruthless young bankers navigating the post-crash world of finance.
- Sinners – Golden Globe–winning, stylish crime drama with a standout score.
- The Pitt – award-winning hospital drama that digs into ethics, burnout and institutional failure.
All three have been recent Top 5 picks in our What to Watch This Week UAE guides and are available on OSN+ right now.
