The lights have dimmed at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the acceptance speeches have wrapped, and the confetti has finally settled. The Game Awards 2025, hosted by Geoff Keighley, has officially concluded, closing out an extraordinary year in interactive entertainment.
Broadcast to a record-breaking global audience, building on the momentum that saw The Game Awards 2024 reach 154 million livestreams, this year’s ceremony was a celebration of ambition, creativity, and the growing cultural weight of video games.
But one title dominated the night, the headlines, and the history books.
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won nine awards at The Game Awards 2025, including Game of the Year, breaking The Last of Us Part II's previous record of seven
- No other game picked up more than one award on the night
- Player voting went a different way, with Wuthering Waves taking the Player's Voice award
Clair Obscur’s record-breaking night
In a show filled with industry heavyweights, it was a relatively new studio that delivered the most decisive victory the awards have ever seen.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the debut RPG from Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive, walked away with a staggering nine awards. That shatters the previous record of seven wins held by The Last of Us Part II.
The game’s success spanned nearly every major creative category, including:
- Game of the Year
- Best Game Direction
- Best Narrative
- Best Art Direction
- Best Score and Music
- Best RPG
On top of that, Jennifer English won Best Performance, cementing Clair Obscur as one of the most complete creative sweeps the show has ever seen.
The achievement is even more striking given that the game entered the night with a record-setting 13 nominations. Its Belle Époque-inspired world, emotionally driven story, and refined turn-based combat proved that bold new IPs can still dominate in a market crowded with sequels and reboots.
What the 2025 results say about the industry
Beyond a single runaway winner, the 2025 results reveal a few clear trends shaping the industry.
Indie and “indie-adjacent” games are no longer outsiders
While Clair Obscur was the night’s biggest story, other critically acclaimed titles proved that smaller teams can stand toe-to-toe with major publishers.
Hollow Knight: Silksong won Best Action/Adventure Game, while Hades II took home Best Action Game. Both titles reinforce how player expectations have shifted toward depth, identity, and long-term engagement rather than pure spectacle.
Long-term support still matters
The awards also highlighted how sustained post-launch commitment is being rewarded.
Baldur’s Gate 3 earned Best Community Support, recognising Larian Studios’ transparency and continued updates. Meanwhile, No Man’s Sky won Best Ongoing Game, extending one of gaming’s most remarkable redemption arcs.
Players and critics don’t always agree, and that’s healthy
The fan-voted Players’ Voice Award went to Wuthering Waves, showing that community passion and critical consensus don’t always overlap. The result reflects a healthier, more diverse ecosystem where different types of games can thrive simultaneously.
