Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 is a new audio platform for earbuds and other hearables, adding on-device AI to adaptive noise cancellation, lossless audio and context-aware listening. The company unveiled it at Snapdragon Summit, but has not named the first retail products that will use it.
Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 puts AI beside the audio hardware
Qualcomm says the platform can deliver up to twice the on-device AI performance of the Snapdragon S7 Gen 1 Sound Platform, while using up to 40% less power. The company also says the footprint is up to 30% smaller, which gives manufacturers more room to build the processing into compact devices.
The AI is intended to handle requests, translations and information retrieval while adjusting to the listener’s activity and surroundings. Qualcomm’s platform supports adaptive ANC and what it calls context-aware listening, so the device can respond to changes around the user rather than applying one fixed audio profile.
The audio side still gets the headline specifications. Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 supports aptX Lossless for bit-for-bit music streaming, alongside XPAN connectivity and Wi-Fi 6E for direct-to-cloud access. 9to5Google reports that Qualcomm is also using AI to improve ANC through its fifth-generation protocol.
The platform is aimed at premium AI earbuds, open-ear and hybrid devices, audio glasses, camera buds, hearing and wellness products, and other AI wearables. Qualcomm has not confirmed a launch date, pricing or a specific manufacturer for the first devices.
What Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 means for upcoming earbuds
For shoppers, the platform is a component announcement, not a product announcement. The first earbuds using it will still need to balance battery life, microphones, software support and the quality of each manufacturer’s AI assistant. The chip can make those features possible; it cannot guarantee that every model will use them well.
