In a move announced at CES 2026 in Las Vegas this January, Sandisk is rebranding its internal SSD lineup, previously known as WD_BLACK and WD Blue, under a new umbrella: SANDISK Optimus. This change aims to simplify the product tiers for UAE users looking for storage solutions for gaming, creative work, or professional use.
The company stated the rebrand reflects a focus on performance and reliability in flash memory. While the names are changing, Sandisk says the new Optimus range carries forward its existing reputation for quality, which is important for anyone building a new PC or upgrading an old one here in Dubai.
New Names, Familiar Tech: The Optimus Lineup
Sandisk is streamlining its internal SSD offerings into three distinct lines under the new Optimus brand.
The goal is to make it clearer for consumers to pick the right drive for their specific needs, whether that's for a high-end gaming rig or a workstation for content creation.
- SANDISK Optimus: This entry-level line is for content creators needing faster computing with a balance of speed and affordability. It replaces the previous WD Blue lineup, including models like the WD Blue SN5100 NVMe SSD.
- SANDISK Optimus GX: Designed for gamers, these drives aim for fast load times, expanded capacity, and power efficiency. This line takes over from the popular WD_BLACK series, such as the WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe SSD.
- SANDISK Optimus GX PRO: The top-tier offering, the GX PRO is built for developers, professionals, and high-end gamers. It targets those building AI PCs, workstations, or uncompromising gaming machines. This replaces flagship WD_BLACK models, including the WD_BLACK SN8100 NVMe SSD.
Essentially, if you were a fan of WD Blue for everyday performance, you'll now look for SANDISK Optimus. If you relied on WD_BLACK for gaming or heavy-duty tasks, the Optimus GX or GX PRO will be your go-to.
What This Means for UAE Buyers
For UAE consumers, this rebrand primarily means new packaging and product names. The underlying technology and performance characteristics are expected to align with the previous WD_BLACK and WD Blue series, which have a solid reputation.
The shift might initially cause a little confusion, but Sandisk hopes the new naming convention will ultimately make it easier to choose. It's a strategic move to position Sandisk more directly in the internal SSD market, especially as demand grows for faster storage in gaming laptops and high-performance desktops.
Availability and Pricing in the UAE
The transition to the new SANDISK Optimus branding begins now, with products featuring the updated names expected to arrive in select retailers worldwide in the first half of 2026.
UAE pricing and exact availability dates are still to be confirmed. We'll be keeping an eye out for local announcements from retailers like Virgin Megastore, Sharaf DG, and Amazon AE.
