Sony’s Scrapped Sinister Six Movie Concept Art Reveals a Wild New Direction for Spider-Man

Concept art reportedly made for Sony’s cancelled Sinister Six places Spider-Man above the Savage Land and revives its portals-and-dinosaurs plan.

The artwork points to a much stranger Spider-Man adventure

The reported concept art places Spider-Man above the Savage Land, far beyond his familiar New York skyline. Our sister site IGN Middle East reports that the image came from artist Victor Martinez, who linked it to Sony’s abandoned Sinister Six project.

The artwork appears to show Spider-Man falling towards a prehistoric island while missile-like objects are launched in his direction. Martinez said the image was mocked up many years ago, making it archival development material rather than confirmation of a final scene.

There is another wrinkle: the artwork uses the MCU Spider-Man logo even though Sinister Six originated during Sony’s earlier plans around The Amazing Spider-Man films. That leaves the exact version of Spider-Man depicted in the image uncertain, but the setting fits development details previously associated with the project.

Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six collapsed during Sony’s franchise reset

Sinister Six was planned as a villain-led spin-off from Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man era, with Drew Goddard set to write and direct. The proposed film would have assembled several of Spider-Man’s enemies while keeping the web-slinger involved in the story.

Development accounts suggested that audiences would follow villains with potentially redeemable qualities while Spider-Man attempted to stop them. It was an ambitious route for a superhero spin-off, even before somebody added portals and dinosaurs to the meeting agenda.

The film was cancelled following the 2014 Sony hack and the studio’s subsequent reset with Marvel Studios in 2015. Goddard later said the project “went down because of the Sony hack”, describing FBI activity around the studio as the turning point.

Sony eventually pursued a separate run of films centred on Spider-Man villains, including Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter. The earlier Sinister Six plan differed by giving Spider-Man a direct role in the developing story rather than leaving him beyond its edges.

The Savage Land idea shows how big the project might have gone

The concept art’s main significance is the scale it suggests for the cancelled film. Development details indicated that one version of the story would have taken the Sinister Six to the Savage Land, Marvel’s dangerous prehistoric setting.

Leaked Sony emails reportedly referred to time-travel portals and dinosaurs as part of that iteration. The newly discussed artwork aligns with the island setting, although concept art often explores possibilities that never become finished scenes or settled plot points.

That still makes the image a fascinating glimpse at Sony’s earlier Spider-Man ambitions. A villain team-up, a prehistoric island, incoming missiles, portals, and dinosaurs would have pushed the character well outside his usual urban territory. Subtle it was not; potentially memorable, absolutely.
