Zack Snyder says Rebel Moon 3 may depend on the director’s cuts finding an audience

Rebel Moon 3 is unconfirmed, and Zack Snyder says he does not know whether another film will happen. In an interview with The Direct, the filmmaker said the R-rated director’s cuts of the two existing films may need to find more viewers and build a “groundswell” before a third instalment becomes realistic. His answer included no release date, production start or Netflix commitment.

IGN reported Snyder’s comments from an interview with The Direct at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he was promoting The Last Photograph. The featured image is an official Netflix still from the first Rebel Moon film, not artwork for a third instalment.

“I don’t know,” … “and I do feel that as those maybe get a little bit more popular and sort of like get discovered and there’s a little bit more groundswell about maybe making another one.”

The comments leave the sequel’s status unconfirmed. Snyder pointed to a possible condition for returning — audience interest in the existing cuts — rather than saying another instalment is actively being developed. He did not set a viewership target, give a decision date or say Netflix had approved a third film.

Rebel Moon 3 has no confirmed path forward

The two released films are Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire (2023) and Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver (2024). Netflix released R-rated director’s cuts of both in August 2024. The official still below shows Sofia Boutella as Kora in Part One; it is franchise context, not a preview of another film.

Last year, co-writer Kurt Johnstad said the team had detailed outlines for films three through six. He also said decisions about how the films would be made and where their budgets would come from were out of his hands; IGN linked to the Minutemen Podcast interview.

Johnstad’s outlines show the writers had ideas for more stories; they do not mean the films entered pre-production or that Netflix committed to financing them. Snyder’s latest answer adds no development detail: he did not say whether the director’s cuts are being treated as a formal test for more films.

Netflix’s 2026 views show continued watching, not a greenlight

Netflix’s What We Watched report for January to June 2026 lists views for each version. These are views during that six-month window, not lifetime totals. Netflix defines a view as total hours watched divided by runtime, so it is a runtime-adjusted measure rather than a count of individual people; the streamer explains the formula in its engagement-report methodology. Netflix also provides the underlying spreadsheet.

Each director’s cut drew more views in the period than The Scargiver’s standard version, while the original cut of Part One led the four. The figures show that people continued watching all four editions, but Netflix’s report does not connect those totals to renewal decisions or explain what level of engagement would justify another film.

Viewing windows also matter. Tbreak’s report on the GTA 6 Netflix extended look covered four days and recorded 31.1 million views; that is a different format and measurement window, so it is not a direct benchmark for a film’s six-month total. Snyder has not said how he would measure the “groundswell” he mentioned.

Snyder’s comments came while he was promoting The Last Photograph. He has also discussed a planned Escape from New York remake, including its 1997 setting viewed through the perspective of 1981, as tbreak reported in its plot-details coverage. That is a separate project, not an update on the Rebel Moon films.

For now, another instalment remains a possibility rather than an announced sequel. Snyder is waiting to see whether the existing director’s cuts find more viewers; the latest Netflix figures record viewing, but do not confirm that a third film is moving ahead.
