A PS5 jailbreak called Relapse now works on consoles running firmware up to 13.60, bringing the exploit to software released in late July and stopping short of Sony’s 14.00 update. The method became public on 29 September, after Kotaku reported on the release and MODDED WARFARE demonstrated it.

PS5 jailbreak: firmware 13.60 is the limit

MODDED WARFARE’s video says the Relapse exploit supports PS5 system software from 7.00 through 13.60. It does not cover 14.00, the update Sony released on 16 September. That leaves Relapse close to the current firmware rather than confined to consoles left on much older software.

The version number matters because each system update can close an entry point. Tbreak’s coverage of PS5 update 26.06-14.00.00 details what Sony added in that release. A console running 14.00 is outside the Relapse support range described by the developers and the reporting so far.

TwistedVoxel reports that the method works on both the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro. That does not mean every console currently on sale is vulnerable: the installed firmware varies by unit, and systems already updated to 14.00 are not covered by this release.

What the Relapse PS5 jailbreak changes

The main practical change is speed. MODDED WARFARE says Relapse loads in a few seconds, compared with waits of up to 50 minutes for some earlier methods on firmware above 12.00. The demonstration is a useful check on the release claim, but it is not a guarantee that every console will run the exploit reliably.

Relapse is also not a permanent modification. The video says the jailbreak has to be run again after a reboot, and the initial release still needs separate payload software for functions such as homebrew. Users should not read “jailbreak released” as meaning every feature or game-copy tool is already working on every supported firmware.

The release follows earlier PS5 jailbreak reporting that was still speculative. Our report on the PS5 ROM-key leak claims explained that a low-level security claim alone does not produce a usable jailbreak. Relapse is a demonstrated exploit chain, but its practical limits still depend on firmware and the supporting payloads.

What the PS5 jailbreak means for piracy claims

Kotaku argues that Relapse could affect newer games because their system requirements often expect recent firmware. It points to Marvel’s Wolverine, released on 15 September, and reports that users on the PS5 jailbreak subreddit say The Witcher 3 Remastered runs through the new method. The latter is a community report, not an independent test in the article.

Those examples do not establish that every game released before 14.00 can be copied or played through Relapse. The exploit widens access to the console, while payload support and each game’s requirements remain separate questions. Kotaku frames the back-catalogue risk as a possibility; it has not quantified how many titles work or how widely the method is being used.

For players, the practical split is between staying on supported firmware for homebrew and keeping the console updated for Sony’s latest system software and online services. The public release makes that trade-off more immediate, but it does not turn 14.00 consoles into supported systems or remove the need to reload the jailbreak after a restart.

Does the Relapse exploit mean every PS5 game can now be copied?

No. The exploit provides a way into supported consoles, but each game still depends on firmware requirements and compatible payloads. Reports that particular games run are not proof that the full PS5 library works.

Can a PS5 on firmware 14.00 use Relapse?

The release information and demonstrations cited so far stop at firmware 13.60. A PS5 already running 14.00 is outside the stated support range.

Does the Relapse jailbreak stay active after a PS5 restarts?

No. The method is tethered, so the jailbreak has to be loaded again after a reboot before its homebrew functions return.
