After seeing what was on offer with December's PS Plus games, this is a mighty impressive way to kick off the year.

Two titans lead the charge

I was thrilled to see both Resident Evil Village and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth on the list. Getting to step back into the harrowing, snow-dusted world of Village is a treat for anyone who missed it at launch. It’s an anxiety-inducing experience in the best way possible. Then you have Infinite Wealth, a sprawling, heartfelt, and utterly bizarre RPG that I sank dozens of hours into. Having both of these massive games, available on PS4 and PS5, land on the service at the same time is a huge win for subscribers.

A strong supporting cast

Beyond the headliners, the rest of the Extra tier offering is solid. I am particularly looking forward to the maddening, soul-crushing challenge of Darkest Dungeon II, a game that tests your strategic thinking and your patience. There are also some fantastic smaller titles like the cozy puzzle game A Little to the Left and the stylish racer Art of Rally. It's a nicely balanced list, especially compared to months when PS Plus leans indie; this time there's something for everyone.

A classic with a catch

For us older gamers, seeing Ridge Racer arrive for PS Plus Premium members is a welcome hit of nostalgia. The classic arcade racer from Bandai Namco is a legendary title. But there's a catch, mind you. We still don't know if this version will come with trophy support. Other Bandai Namco classics on the service have skipped them, which would be quite disappointing here, especially since an Arcade Archives version with trophies already exists. I’m hoping for the best, but I'm keeping my expectations in check.
