Nothing Phone (4a) vs (4a) Pro: Which One Should You Buy in the UAE?

I've been testing both Nothing Phone (4a) and (4a) Pro in Dubai. AED 1,599 vs AED 2,299 — here's what UAE consumers need to know.

Nothing Phone (4a) vs (4a) Pro: Which One Should You Buy in the UAE?
Nothing Phone (4a) vs (4a) Pro

I've had both the Nothing Phone (4a) and (4a) Pro in hand since launch, sent directly by Nothing. They launched on the same day, at the same event, with the same Periscope camera story — and they are genuinely two very different phones. The standard model starts at AED 1,599 in the UAE. The Pro starts at AED 2,299. That AED 700 gap is either an obvious upgrade or an easy pass, depending entirely on what you value in a phone.

This isn't a full review, but what I found after playing with both for a day or two in Dubai.

Quick Takeaway

I received the (4a) in blue — which is genuinely polarising — and the (4a) Pro in pink, which looks stunning. After using both, I'd personally go with the Pro: the larger Glyph Matrix, the all-metal build, and the combination of premium industrial design running Nothing's clean software is a pairing you can't get anywhere else at this price. That said, for most buyers the standard (4a) is the smarter, more honest purchase.

Design: Two Very Different Phones

This is the comparison's most underappreciated divide. These aren't the same phone with a spec bump — they look fundamentally different, and that difference defines the experience.

The standard Phone (4a) keeps everything that made Nothing worth paying attention to: a semi-transparent back, exposed internal components as aesthetic detail, and the brand's signature A-shaped camera module. The blue unit I received is, I'll be honest, polarising — it's a colour that demands attention in a way that not everyone will be comfortable with. If you want the full picture on how Nothing arrived at this design, Nothing's design reveal told us everything about the (4a)'s aesthetic direction — and nothing about the specs. The 63-LED Glyph Bar is rebuilt and more expressive than the (3a)'s simpler strip — but it's still fundamentally a very Nothing-looking phone.

The (4a) Pro takes a sharp left turn. The full transparent back is gone, replaced by a premium all-metal aluminium chassis at 7.95mm thin, with transparency confined to the camera module. The pink Pro unit I have is genuinely striking — it reads as a high-end device in a way that would feel at home next to an iPhone or a Galaxy flagship. Nothing has essentially made a phone for people who admire the brand's software philosophy but wanted the external design to blend into a more mainstream aesthetic.

The Glyph Matrix on the Pro — 137 mini-LEDs capable of pixel-style animations and icons — is a fundamentally different proposition to the (4a)'s 63-LED Glyph Bar. It's less "notification light" and more "secondary display on the back of the phone."

IP ratings: Both carry IP65 dust and water resistance — adequate for UAE conditions, though not class-leading at this price.

Performance: The Chipset Gap Matters More Than It Sounds

The (4a) uses a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4; the Pro steps up to a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Nothing claims that translates to 27% faster CPU, 30% better graphics, and 65% stronger AI performance. Those are meaningful numbers, not marketing rounding errors.

For everyday UAE usage — Instagram, Maps, streaming on Shahid or Netflix, casual gaming — the 7s Gen 4 in the standard (4a) should handle everything without complaint. The gap opens under sustained load: extended BGMI or CoD Mobile sessions, simultaneous app switching, or longer video exports. The Pro's Adreno 722 GPU and LPDDR5X RAM will manage heat and throughput better over time.

The 144Hz display on the Pro also makes more sense paired with the faster chip — scrolling and UI animations genuinely feel smoother when the hardware can maintain that refresh rate without dropping frames.

For most people, the (4a)'s performance is more than enough. For mobile gamers and heavy multitaskers: the Pro is the better long-term investment.

Cameras: Same Architecture, Different Ceiling

Both phones share the same structural camera layout — 50MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 50MP periscope telephoto — but the sensors inside tell a different story. For the full UAE pricing and complete specs breakdown on both models, see our Nothing Phone (4a) and (4a) Pro UAE price and specs guide.

I am testing the (4a)'s camera in Dubai's midday sun, and the results are genuinely impressive for the price. The upgraded 1.5K display with 4,500 nits peak brightness means you can frame and review shots without squinting or stepping into the shade — outdoor shooting is an uncompromised experience. Extended photography sessions do cause the phone to run slightly warm to the touch, both indoors and outside, but it never throttled noticeably during my testing.

On the sensor side, the Pro's Sony LYT700C main sensor outclasses the (4a)'s Samsung GN9 for dynamic range and low-light handling. The zoom difference is also more meaningful than it might appear on paper: 70x hybrid on the standard model versus 140x on the Pro. In a city where you're regularly shooting skylines from a distance, desert landscapes, or architecture across a wide plaza, that extra reach has practical value rather than just looking good on a spec sheet.

The Pro also shoots 4K Ultra XDR video versus standard 4K on the (4a). For anyone creating content for UAE-based social channels, that output quality difference is visible on modern screens.

The Glyph Divide

The (4a)'s 63-LED Glyph Bar is the most refined version of Nothing's original notification concept — caller ID strips, charging progress, app-specific alerts, all more expressive than anything in the (3a). If you've used a Nothing phone before and actually used the Glyph features, this is a meaningful upgrade.

The (4a) Pro's 137-LED Glyph Matrix is a category entirely on its own. Pixel animations, timers, battery readouts, interactive functions — it behaves less like a notification light and more like a small ambient display on the rear of the phone.

Whether that justifies part of the AED 700 premium depends on your relationship with the feature. If you ignored Glyphs on your last Nothing phone, more LEDs won't change that. If you're the kind of person who actually has Glyph ringtones set per contact, the Matrix is genuinely exciting.

A Note on UAE Practicalities

A few things worth knowing before you buy either device in the UAE:

Both phones use a standard dual nano-SIM tray — no eSIM support on either model. For most UAE users who manage a personal and work number or run a local SIM alongside a roaming card, this is a practical and reliable setup. Just don't expect to set up a digital SIM for travel.

Outdoor visibility is excellent on both devices. The (4a)'s 4,500-nit display handles full Dubai midday sun without issue. The Pro's 5,000-nit panel edges ahead, but in real-world conditions, both are legible without adjustment.

Heat management: Both phones run warm during extended camera use or streaming. It's noticeable but not alarming — nothing that triggered thermal throttling in my testing. Worth knowing if you're planning long sessions outdoors in summer.

My Verdict

The Nothing Phone (4a) is the easier recommendation for most people. It keeps the transparent identity that defines the brand, delivers a genuinely capable periscope camera, and runs the same clean Nothing OS 4.1 at AED 1,599. For a mid-range phone in the UAE, it's hard to argue against it.

But I'd personally buy the Pro — and not just for the camera or the specs. What draws me to it is the combination of premium industrial design running Nothing's software. Every other phone at this price point with a metal build and a mainstream aesthetic runs Samsung One UI or stock Android with a skin on top. The (4a) Pro delivers the build quality that fits comfortably for a business meeting or a night out in DIFC, while the software underneath remains one of the cleanest, least cluttered Android experiences available.

Buy the Nothing Phone (4a) at AED 1,599 if:

  • The transparent Nothing design is why you're here
  • Your usage is everyday: social, streaming, photography, without extreme zoom
  • You want the better value-for-money proposition

Buy the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro at AED 2,299 if:

  • You want the premium metal build with Nothing's software — that specific combination exists nowhere else at this price
  • Camera quality and 4K Ultra XDR video matter to you
  • You'll actually use the Glyph Matrix
  • Mobile gaming is a meaningful part of your routine
