Notebooks in Gemini arrive for Google Workspace and Education accounts

Google is bringing Notebooks in Gemini to Google Workspace and Education accounts, giving organisations, schools and universities a dedicated place to keep AI conversations and source material together.

The rollout covers students, educators and professionals. Google says users can add course notes, assignment rubrics, product information, research reports and other material to a notebook, then use Gemini to create study guides, quizzes, reports, slide decks and other outputs. The feature is already available to personal Google account users, and this update puts it directly in the Workspace version of Gemini.

Notebooks in Gemini give Workspace users a focused area for projects

Google describes Notebooks in Gemini as a combination of the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook, previously known as NotebookLM. The aim is to keep a project’s conversations and reference material in one place instead of making users shuttle between separate tools. Google’s announcement gives a student example: class notes can be used in Gemini Notebook to create a Cinematic Video Overview, then opened in Gemini to produce a study guide.

Each notebook can hold up to 10 sources. That makes the feature useful for a course unit, a project brief or a defined research task, but less suited to acting as a warehouse for an entire organisation’s document archive. Google has also been changing how Notebook limits work for personal accounts; Gemini Notebook usage limits now use a compute-based system rather than a simple daily feature count.

Workspace admins control who can use it

Notebooks in Gemini is on by default, but access still depends on administrators enabling both the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook for the relevant group or organisational unit. Google says the gradual rollout began on 14 September and can take up to 15 days to become visible on Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

The feature is available to Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers outside the European Economic Area, while personal Google accounts can use it globally. The rollout does not change the existing Gemini Notebook service; it removes a few steps by bringing the notebook workspace into Gemini itself. Google’s broader Gemini tools are also adding new ways to work with personal content, including Gemini Spark’s Google Photos workflows.
