Netflix SEGA adaptations include three new projects: a Crazy Taxi film, a new animated Sonic the Hedgehog series and a live-action Stranger Than Heaven film. The announcement covers three very different corners of SEGA’s catalogue, which is one way to avoid making every adaptation sound like the same adaptation.
Netflix SEGA adaptations include Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven films
The Crazy Taxi film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writers behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. TheWrap’s report also confirms the project’s writers and producers. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film will produce alongside SEGA’s Toru Nakahara.
Crazy Taxi began in arcades in 1999, sending players through city streets while they raced the clock and chased fares. The next game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for 2027, although Netflix has not announced a release date for the film.
Stranger Than Heaven, from RGG Studio, is also being adapted as a live-action film, with Nakahara producing. The game is set in early 20th-century Japan and follows a foreigner who rises from poverty to become a feared yakuza and entertainment tycoon. The game is scheduled for January 2027, while details about the film remain under wraps.
The new Sonic series is aimed at younger viewers
The new Sonic the Hedgehog project is an animated series for an upper pre-school audience. Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara are attached to the project, which Netflix describes as a comedic and emotionally grounded show about Sonic and his friends.
The series is separate from Sonic Prime, Netflix’s earlier animated show, which ran for three seasons from 2022 to 2024. Netflix has not announced a title, episode count, release date or voice cast for the new series.
The three Netflix SEGA adaptations have no announced release dates yet. Netflix and SEGA have also not confirmed whether the Crazy Taxi film or Stranger Than Heaven film will be connected to any existing game storylines.
