Mike Flanagan says the live-action Warhammer 40,000 series he’s developing with Henry Cavill for Prime Video has found “a very cool and unexpected on-ramp” into Games Workshop’s sprawling universe. He won’t say what that on-ramp is. In an interview with Deadline, he said “Henry Cavill would be furious if I divulged anything about what we’re working on.”

The problem Flanagan is describing is scale. He told Deadline that the difficulty is finding a way in, given there are 700 novels, before you count the tabletop game, the interactive elements and the rest of the lore. His answer to that was short on detail but long on enthusiasm: he’s “sworn to secrecy on all of it”, but is “having the time of my life working on it.”

The comments came while Flanagan was promoting Carrie, his first series under a multi-year Amazon deal, which Prime Video has renewed for a second season. IGN reports that he has stayed vague on Warhammer in recent interviews, and that last month he called the adaptation “brutally difficult”. The project itself is further along than it was a few months ago. As we reported in July, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree said in the company’s annual report that Flanagan had completed initial outlines and “should soon be moving on to script”. Cavill and Vertigo remain involved, but there is still no title, cast list, production start date or release window.

That leaves fans to guess, and IGN’s Wesley Yin-Poole has. He thinks the show could adapt Dan Abnett’s Eisenhorn novels with Cavill as Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn. His reasoning is that the story centres on humans rather than Space Marines, so it would be tighter in scope. It would also surprise casual fans who know the universe from Space Marine 2 or the Secret Level episode. That’s the IGN writer’s speculation, and neither Flanagan, Amazon nor Games Workshop has confirmed a story or a character for Cavill.

What’s confirmed is the setup. Games Workshop and Amazon announced their plans in December 2022, with Cavill attached as star and executive producer. Amazon is also developing a separate animated Warhammer 40,000 series about the Deathwatch, which Games Workshop says is distinct from Cavill’s live-action project. Flanagan’s comments suggest the live-action show now has a creative direction, even if he’s keeping it to himself.
