What has changed with Henry Cavill’s Warhammer project?
Amazon has brought United Artists and Mike Flanagan onto the Warhammer 40,000 project, according to Games Workshop, while Henry Cavill and Vertigo remain involved.
The update comes from reporting based on Games Workshop’s annual report. CEO Kevin Rountree said Flanagan had completed initial outlines and “should soon be moving on to script.”
That places the adaptation around the outline or pre-script stage. It is tangible movement after a long stretch of concept work, although production remains some distance away. Games Workshop has announced no title, cast list, production start date, or release window.
Cavill and Vertigo “remain involved as they have been for some time,” Rountree said. Cavill previously described adapting Warhammer 40,000 as a complex and tricky challenge, while saying that bringing the universe to life was a dream come true.
Flanagan’s arrival is especially intriguing. His credits include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, making Warhammer 40,000’s more unsettling corners an obvious topic for fan speculation. Games Workshop and Amazon have yet to confirm the project’s tone, however, so the daemons can stay in their rumour-proof containers for now.
What other Warhammer projects has Amazon announced?
Amazon also has two animated Warhammer projects moving ahead: an Age of Sigmar episode for Secret Level Season 2 and a full Warhammer 40,000 series centred on the Deathwatch.
Games Workshop says the Secret Level episode is in late production and almost completed. It takes place in the Mortal Realms of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, shifting the anthology from the Warhammer 40,000 setting used for its first-season episode. Blur Studio is handling the animation.
The second project is a dedicated Deathwatch series planned for Prime Video. Deathwatch follows specialist Space Marines tasked with confronting alien threats, giving the series a clear foundation for focused missions amid Warhammer 40,000’s galactic chaos.
John Orloff, whose credits include Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air, is writing the series, with Blur Studio again providing the animation. GosuGamers’ coverage of the Deathwatch announcement also notes that its release date, plot details, and episode count remain undisclosed.
Games Workshop says both animated productions are separate from Astartes II and Cavill’s live-action project. Apparently one Warhammer adaptation pipeline was insufficiently grimdark.
Is a Warhammer 40,000 movie being made?
A Warhammer 40,000 movie remains possible, but Games Workshop has not confirmed whether Flanagan’s current work is for a film or a television series.
Games Workshop and Amazon concluded negotiations in December 2024 for an agreement covering Warhammer 40,000 films and television projects. Cavill said at the time that the partners had agreed on a starting point for the universe, but that choice remains secret.
The annual-report update confirms creative progress rather than a production schedule. Fans now have named creative partners, completed outlines, and explicit confirmation of Cavill’s continued involvement. The next genuinely revealing milestone will be a confirmed format, story, or production date; until then, the Imperium’s paperwork continues.
