It is a dark day for VR gaming as news of Meta VR studio closures emerges. According to a report by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Meta has confirmed the shuttering of several major studios within its Reality Labs division, including Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio.
This significant Reality Labs shift marks a retreat from first-party VR content creation as the company pivots resources away from the metaverse and towards wearables and AI development, raising questions about VR gaming's future within Meta's ecosystem.
The studios affected
The closures hit some of the most experienced teams in the VR space. Sanzaru Games was responsible for Asgard's Wrath 2, widely considered one of the best games on the Meta Quest 3. Twisted Pixel Games, known for Xbox classics like 'Splosion Man, had recently released Marvel’s Deadpool VR.
"I’ve just been laid off," said Andy Gentile, a designer at Twisted Pixel Games, on X. "It appears the entire Twisted Pixel games studio has been shut down. Sanzaru Games too."
Ray West, a senior level designer at Sanzaru Games, corroborated the news on LinkedIn. "Welp. As many will hear soon, several Meta game studios were closed today, including Sanzaru," West wrote. "It was an amazing team of powerhouse talent... But, onward – I am open to work."
Armature Studio, which handled the excellent Resident Evil 4 VR port, has also been shut down.
Why Meta is pulling the plug
The decision appears to be purely strategic rather than performance-based. Meta confirmed these Meta VR studio closures are part of a broader Reality Labs shift in investment priorities.
"We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from Metaverse toward Wearables," said a Meta spokesperson. "This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year."
This aligns with the industry's broader pivot to AI and mixed reality hardware, rather than the dedicated virtual environments that defined the initial "metaverse" push.
What this means for gamers
For UAE gamers who invested in a Meta Quest 3, this is concerning news, particularly for VR gaming's future. These studios produced the platform's heavy hitters—the high-budget exclusives that justified the hardware purchase.
With these first-party studios gone due to the Meta VR studio closures, the Quest ecosystem will likely rely even more heavily on third-party developers and smaller indie titles. While other gaming news like The Division remaster leak suggests the traditional console market is active, the AAA VR landscape just got significantly smaller.
