Capcom has finally admitted what Mega Man fans have been yelling for years: the Blue Bomber isn’t done yet. The publisher has announced Mega Man: Dual Override, a new 2D entry in the series coming in 2027 to basically every platform – PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. It keeps the classic side-scrolling gameplay, switches to a cel-shaded art style, and lands just as Capcom is trying to push Mega Man back up into its “core IP” club alongside Resident Evil and Street Fighter.
- Capcom has announced Mega Man: Dual Override, a new Mega Man game launching in 2027
- The game keeps the classic 2D Mega Man style but ads a cel-shaded art direction
- It's coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC
A new Mega Man is actually happening – meet Dual Override
Capcom has confirmed that a brand-new Mega Man game, Mega Man: Dual Override, is on the way, with a planned launch in 2027. The announcement dropped during The Game Awards 2025 broadcast, one of the biggest news dumps of the gaming year.
- New mainline Mega Man title: Mega Man: Dual Override
- Release window: 2027 (no exact date yet)
- Revealed live at The Game Awards 2025
- First new Mega Man game announced after Capcom’s “core IP” push
Classic 2D Mega Man with a cel-shaded twist
Capcom isn’t throwing out the Mega Man rulebook here. According to the reveal, Mega Man: Dual Override keeps the familiar 2D side-scrolling gameplay the series is known for, while shifting to a cel-shaded art style.
- Core gameplay: classic 2D Mega Man action
- Visuals: cel-shaded art instead of the more traditional sprite-style look
- Shown via a brief trailer, with no deep dive on levels or bosses yet
The trailer was described as short, so we don’t have details on stages, robot masters, or any new mechanics. What we do know is that Capcom is clearly trying to modernise Mega Man’s look without turning it into a full 3D reboot. Cel-shading usually means bold outlines and flat colours, which should fit Mega Man’s chunky robots and bright level designs quite well – and it should also look clean on everything from handheld mode to 4K TVs.
Coming to PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, last-gen and PC
One of the most interesting parts of the announcement is the platform list. Capcom is putting Mega Man: Dual Override on almost every relevant system:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
- Nintendo Switch 2
- PlayStation 4
- Xbox One
- Nintendo Switch
- PC
That’s a wide net. Supporting both current-gen and last-gen consoles, plus Switch and Switch 2, suggests Capcom wants as many players as possible in the door, not just those on the newest hardware. For UAE players, that matters – a lot of people here still hang on to PS4 and Xbox One, and Switch 2 is only just bedding in with its faster storage and new microSD Express cards.
If you’re planning ahead for a Switch 2 playthrough, it might be worth reading up on Switch 2 storage and microSD Express or even eyeing that 1TB microSD Express card now in the UAE so you’re not deleting half your library in 2027.
Capcom wants Mega Man as a “core IP” again
This new game doesn’t come out of nowhere. Earlier this week, Capcom laid out a strategy to grow Mega Man, Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney up to the level of “core IPs” like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter.
- Capcom targets: sell 100 million games in a single year
- “Core IPs” currently: Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter
- Plan: use new releases, remakes, and ports to boost Mega Man, Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney
- Aim: strengthen “brand power” and grow long-term fanbases
The wording in Capcom’s integrated report is very business-school, but the gist is simple: Mega Man has been underused, and Capcom wants it earning its keep again. Announcing Mega Man: Dual Override days after publicly talking up Mega Man as a future “core IP” makes the strategy a lot more believable – this isn’t just investor slideware any more, there’s an actual new game attached.
If you’ve been following The Game Awards coverage already – from nominations to the full winners list – this reveal slots neatly into a show that’s been heavy on long-running franchises trying to stay relevant.
When is Mega Man: Dual Override coming out?
Capcom has only confirmed a 2027 release window so far. There’s no exact date or quarter yet, just the year and the platforms.
What platforms will Mega Man: Dual Override be on?
According to the announcement, the game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. That covers both current-gen and last-gen systems, plus Nintendo’s newer hardware.
Is Mega Man: Dual Override a 2D or 3D game?
It’s described as featuring classic 2D Mega Man gameplay with a cel-shaded art style. So expect side-scrolling action rather than a full 3D platformer.
