HBO Boss Says The Last of Us Season 3 Is Planned as the Final Season

HBO CEO Casey Bloys says Craig Mazin has planned The Last of Us Season 3 as the final season of the HBO adaptation. The season is scheduled for 2027, although HBO has not announced a specific release date.

Bloys made the comment to Deadline after the Emmys, telling the outlet: “I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season.” IGN reported the remark, while Polygon also covered Bloys’ comments and the expected end of the series.

The Last of Us Season 3 is still set for 2027

Bloys did not provide a month or day for the third season. HBO has only confirmed the broader 2027 window, so the UAE release date remains unconfirmed as well.

The third season is expected to continue the television adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. Season 2 followed Ellie’s pursuit of Abby after Joel’s death, while Season 3 is expected to revisit that period from Abby’s perspective. Polygon reported that the season will also introduce Lev, played by Michelle Mao.

Why Season 3 may be the end of HBO’s adaptation

The comments follow earlier uncertainty over whether the show would continue beyond its third season. Bloys said in January that it “certainly seems that way” when asked whether Season 3 would be the last, but deferred the decision to the showrunners.

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the games and HBO series, has stepped away from the show’s third season. He told The Washington Post that Naughty Dog has no creative role in the final season, while also saying the studio is still working on future projects connected to The Last of Us.

For now, HBO’s plan is clear enough: Season 3 is coming in 2027, and Bloys believes Mazin has designed it as the ending. That remains a statement about the showrunner’s plan rather than a formal announcement that HBO will never revisit the adaptation.
