Double Fine Productions has announced Kiln, an online multiplayer pottery party brawler set to launch later this year. The new Kiln game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and will launch day one on Xbox Game Pass. The game's core concept involves players sculpting custom clay armor to battle in 4v4 matches.

What is the Kiln game?

In Kiln, players control a small spirit that crafts its own protective armor using a pottery wheel. According to the studio's announcement, players have full control over the armor's shape and properties, which directly influences their character's size, abilities, and attacks. Whether tall and narrow or short and wide, each design offers different gameplay advantages.

Once sculpted, the armor can be decorated with a variety of toppers, glazes, and charms. Players then take their custom creations into the game's primary mode, 'Quench,' which features 4v4 online battles across several unique maps. The studio has not yet detailed the specific objectives of the mode.

Accessible Crafting and Focused Launch

Project Lead Derek Brand explained that the team wanted to make the creative process straightforward, in contrast to real-world pottery. "We wanted to make the pot-making super easy and accessible – it’s just a button and a control stick – and you can make any kind of shape you wanted," Brand said. "We wanted people to immediately feel like they’re masters at this craft."

At launch, the focus will be entirely on the core 'Quench' mode and lobby experience. Brand stated that the team will listen to community feedback before adding new modes post-launch. "At launch we’re really committing to Quench mode and the lobby experience," he explained. "We’re going to be shipping with several maps — they all have a unique gameplay hook to them — and they’re very different from each other."
