Dennings recalled the Mad Max Fury Road audition in a TikTok video, saying she was paired with Hardy for a chemistry read. The dialogue ran to a couple of vague pages, while the acting coach asked them to switch roles, run around a corner and make noises instead of saying the lines.
“I mean, Tom Hardy, he really took to this exercise. Like, he was able to be extremely free and come up with very creative ways of doing these lines,” Dennings said, in comments quoted by IGN.
The audition lasted six hours, with a lunch break in the middle. Dennings said she was living with her parents and did not have a car at the time, so she planned to call for a ride after the session.
Tom Hardy drove her home after the screen test
Hardy offered to drive Dennings home. Once there, he met her mother and stayed for tea while Dennings went to her converted-garage room, changed into her pyjamas and took a nap.
“A few hours later, I go back into the main house, and Tom Hardy is still there. Having tea with my mother, and just chatting it up,” Dennings said. TheWrap also reported the story, including Dennings’ account of the unusual audition exercises and Hardy’s lift home.
Dennings did not specify which role she was testing for. Hardy went on to play Max Rockatansky in George Miller’s 2015 film, which starred Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult and made more than $380 million worldwide. It won six Academy Awards.
She did not join the film, but later played Darcy Lewis in Marvel’s Thor films and WandaVision. Hardy’s tea visit, meanwhile, appears to have secured a more durable review than the audition itself.
