Saber Interactive has announced an untitled John Wick game starring Keanu Reeves. The game debuted with a trailer during Thursday's State of Play presentation, though the developer has asked fans to "stay tuned" for more details including an official title and release date.
A new chapter in the John Wick timeline
The game will feature a new narrative set "years before the Impossible Task," according to Saber Interactive. This timeline placement will expand on the franchise's lore during that period, featuring both familiar characters fans know and new ones created specifically for the game.
"This game takes place during a specific period within the John Wick timeline and contributes to the expansive and rich lore of the franchise," said Jesus Iglesias, the game's director, speaking to the PlayStation Blog.
Film's creative team heavily involved
The John Wick film franchise's creative team will be heavily involved in the game's development. Saber Interactive is working closely with Chad Stahelski, the John Wick director and franchise visionary, alongside Keanu Reeves and Lionsgate to create what they describe as an "adrenaline-fueled experience."
"We are working closely with Chad Stahelski (John Wick director and franchise visionary), Keanu Reeves, and Lionsgate to produce a highly anticipated, adrenaline-fueled experience that fits into the world of John Wick," Iglesias confirmed.
Custom combat system mimics films
The game will feature a distinct combat system developed from the ground up to authentically recreate the John Wick film experience. The development team is focusing on faithfully mimicking the movie's iconic action sequences in a fully playable format.
"The style of fighting will feel like an authentic John Wick action scene taken straight from the films. Everything is designed to faithfully mimic the movie experience in a meaningful, fully playable way," Iglesias explained. "In order to achieve that, we are developing a distinct combat system from the ground up to ensure we stay credible to the iconic style of John Wick."
Lionsgate partnership brings authenticity
The game is being developed in partnership with Lionsgate, the film studio behind the action franchise. This collaboration aims to capture the unparalleled action and brand-defining fight choreography that makes the John Wick films distinctive.
"We are collaborating closely with Saber's dedicated team to develop a game that captures the unparalleled action, brand-defining fight choreography, immersive world-building, and authenticity of the films," said Jenefer Brown, president of global products and experiences at Lionsgate.
This announcement follows previous confirmation that Lionsgate was working on an AAA John Wick game, marking the realisation of long-held fan expectations for a video game adaptation of the popular action franchise.
