The House of Hikmah brings the Islamic Golden Age to PC this April

Today, newly formed indie developer Lunacy Studios announced that its debut title, The House of Hikmah, will launch on PC via Steam on Wednesday, April 8. Set in a mystical realm inspired by the Islamic Golden Age, the narrative-driven 3D adventure promises a deep exploration of grief and legacy. Notably for players in the region, the game will launch with full Arabic text and voiceover localization alongside English.

If the game sounds familiar, it’s because it recently caught our eye during February's demo festival season. You can dive deeper into our early hands-on impressions in our dedicated The House of Hikmah demo preview.

Physics, Grief, and the House of Wisdom

Players take on the role of Maya, a 14-year-old searching for answers after her father's passing. The core gameplay revolves around an elemental heirloom used to manipulate the environment. You’ll be bending matter and gliding through wind channels to solve physics-based puzzles across nine distinct worlds.

Each world represents the expertise of historical scholars from the era, whom Maya meets on her journey. The narrative physically manifests her emotional struggles as a surreal force known as the "Widow," which players will have to overcome to progress.

An Indie Team with AAA Veterans

While Lunacy Studios is a fully remote indie team, its roster is stacked with developers who have previously worked on massive franchises like Mass Effect, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Assassin’s Creed. The game's score is being handled by Austin Wintory, the Grammy-nominated composer behind Journey and The Pathless.

The studio has also pulled in a solid voice cast to bring the fully voice-acted dialogue to life, including Sophia Eleni (Cairn) as Maya, Nezar Alderazi (Battlefield 6), and Laila Alj (Assassin’s Creed Mirage).

“We want to create a universally relatable story representing the difficult yet hopeful journey through grief,” said Faris Attieh, Creative Director at Lunacy Studios. “One of the ways we’ve achieved this is through Maya’s many interactions with the scholars. Their inclusion gave us not only an opportunity to showcase how her father’s life and his lessons had a significant impact on those around him, but it also enabled us to create representation for the Islamic Golden Age which has never been seen before in games.”
