Rockstar is making GTA 6 weapons behave more like weapons in public, rather than invisible equipment that appears from nowhere. NPCs will react when Jason or Lucia carries a gun openly, according to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson.
The change was explained in an interview with GamesRadar+. Nelson said GTA 5’s approach no longer fits a world with more detailed characters and behaviour. In that game, a player could pull a shotgun from nowhere in front of a crowd and continue walking as if nothing had happened.

GTA 6 weapons will change how crowds react
In GTA 6, people may move away if they see a handgun in the player’s hand. Police can also react to a rifle being carried openly. A long gun strapped to a character’s back should draw less attention, while holding it in public is more likely to make people uncomfortable.
Nelson said the game allows Jason and Lucia to carry two concealed handguns. Players can also carry two long guns, but they will not disappear into an invisible inventory: one can be held while the other sits on the character’s back.
The system connects to Rockstar’s wider effort to make the population feel less decorative. In a separate IGN interview, Nelson described NPCs that notice when players stand too close, follow them for too long or interfere with their conversations. The game’s Criminal Profile system will also track how players behave, although it is not designed to force a single moral path.
GTA 6 weapons are part of a more reactive world
The aim is not to stop players carrying guns. It is to make the world respond to what they are doing. A player who keeps a long gun slung over their shoulder may pass through a crowd without trouble; one who walks down the street with it raised can expect people to notice.
That fits the wider design direction shown in Rockstar’s recent footage. GTA 6 will let players move between Jason and Lucia, and systems such as the sleep and activity tracking are intended to make their lives outside missions more persistent. Weapons are getting the same treatment: they remain useful, but they now have a social cost in crowded spaces.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.
