GTA 6’s optional relationship system has prompted some social-media users to call the game’s romance mechanics cheating on a real-life partner, according to IGN. Rockstar has said players can leave Jason and Lucia’s relationship largely alone.
GTA 6 relationship system puts Jason and Lucia together
The reaction follows the extended look at GTA 6 released on 27 August. The preview showed Jason and Lucia as a couple whose bond can be shaped through everyday interactions, including going on dates, texting, holding hands and committing crimes together.
IGN reports that several TikTok users objected to the idea of a partner playing through those scenes. Some described the fictional relationship as cheating and one creator warned other users not to let their boyfriend, fiancé or husband play the game. The wider response included plenty of people arguing that it is, in fact, a video game and not a second household.
The GTA 6 relationship system is optional. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN that players can choose not to pursue the romance. Jason and Lucia will still support each other, but their relationship will not develop in the same way if players keep things platonic.
Rockstar is still working out physical intimacy
Nelson also said Rockstar is considering how physical intimacy should work. GTA 6’s trailers suggest that Jason and Lucia will have sexual scenes in the story, but Rockstar has not confirmed whether players can initiate intimacy by building the relationship.
That remains separate from the confirmed mechanics. Players can influence how close Jason and Lucia become, but the game will not require them to play as a couple. Polygon’s preview also describes a friend-zone option, while IGN’s earlier explanation says the romance can be ignored entirely.
The argument is familiar territory for the Grand Theft Auto series. GTA 4 let Niko Bellic build relationships that could lead to implied sex, while the cut “Hot Coffee” mini-game in GTA: San Andreas caused a legal and ratings headache after modders restored it. GTA 6 appears to be taking a more cautious route, at least until Rockstar decides what the relationship system should actually allow.
