Rockstar has confirmed there will be no GTA 6 microtransactions at launch, and that no generative AI was used in development. The answers came in response to direct questions put to Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, during recent visits to the studio in Scotland.
The exchange surfaced on the Kinda Funny Gamecast, as reported by GameSpot. Andy Cortez and Greg Miller both said they asked Nelson the questions point-blank, and both received a “no”.
“Can you use your own real-world money to buy things in the game? No monetization.”
“I asked point blank, ‘is AI in the game?’ No AI.”

The New York Times corroborates the generative AI point in its Grand Theft Auto VI feature published today, reporting that Rockstar emphasised “the new game’s human-made craft”. It also puts GTA 6’s animation count at well over 600,000, against 55,000 in Grand Theft Auto V and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA 6 microtransactions and the GTA Online question
The “at launch” qualifier carries some weight. GTA Online has spent a decade feeding Take-Two’s bottom line through Shark Card purchases — the publisher was still reiterating an $8 billion net bookings forecast for the current year as GTA 6 neared. A launch without microtransactions does not rule out monetisation arriving later, in the way Grand Theft Auto V’s story mode eventually grew into GTA Online itself.
What is confirmed is the game’s hand-built core. Alongside the 30fps cap on consoles confirmed last week, Rockstar North has now put its cards on the table about how GTA 6 was made — and how it will ask to be paid.
