Google Maps’ Ask Maps assistant can now order food, book hotels and find event tickets, taking the app a step past navigation into running errands. The agentic upgrade, announced on Thursday, is rolling out in the US first.
Ask Maps stops suggesting and starts doing
Ask Maps, the Gemini-powered conversational layer Google launched in March, already recommended places to eat and go. The new version finishes the job. Ask it where to order vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near home, and it surfaces matching restaurants, builds a cart through Square, Toast or Uber Eats, and hands you to the platform to pay.
It stops short of eating the food on your behalf.
Hotels get the same treatment: ask for a decently priced, top-rated room with an artsy vibe near a gym, and Ask Maps compares prices, checks availability and points you to the partner’s site to book. Queries about comedy shows or live music this evening return listings with links to buy tickets.
The upgrade puts Google in the middle of transactions that currently flow through delivery apps and booking sites. The commercial logic is not hard to read.
The map reads your email now
Personal Intelligence arrives in Ask Maps, drawing on Gmail and Google Calendar to answer questions such as when your flight lands or where to eat near your hotel. It is off by default — a small mercy for anyone who has ever emailed a flight number.
Ask Maps also remembers previous conversations, so trip planning survives an app restart, and a live transit widget tracks delays as they happen.
When does the UAE get it?
The ordering and booking features are US-only for now. Personal Intelligence and the transit widget roll out to every market where Ask Maps is available, which has meant the US and India since its March launch. Google has not announced a Middle East date.
The supported food platforms — Square, Toast and Uber Eats — are US services, while ordering in the UAE runs on talabat and Deliveroo. The feature would need a different set of local partners before it meant anything here.
Google Maps already carries RTA schedules for Dubai Metro and buses, so the transit widget at least has something to track when Ask Maps eventually arrives. For now, the map will keep merely pointing. It has hosted stranger things, like Spider-Man’s Street View hunt.
