The God of War show just found its Atreus — and he's got quite the résumé

The God of War show has found its Atreus. Amazon and Sony have confirmed that Callum Vinson will play Kratos' son in the upcoming Prime Video series, marking another major casting announcement for what's shaping up to be one of streaming's most anticipated video game adaptations.

Who is Callum Vinson?

Vinson brings solid credentials to the role, with appearances in Chucky, Long Bright River, and Poker Face already on his CV. He's also set to play young Jason Voorhees in the upcoming Friday the 13th spinoff Crystal Lake, so he's clearly comfortable in genre territory.

The casting pairs him with Ryan Hurst as Kratos — a choice that made waves when it was announced, given that Hurst actually voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarok. Now he's playing the Ghost of Sparta himself.

What we know about Atreus in the show

The official character description paints Atreus as a 10-year-old who "grew up in a remote forest cabin, isolated from the rest of the world and raised almost entirely by his mother, Faye." He's described as an accomplished archer with an affinity for animals and intense curiosity about the world beyond his forest home.

After his mother's death, Atreus finds himself with "a cold, distant father who he barely knows and who knows little about him in return." The description adds that "Atreus yearns for his father's approval and is desperate to prove he is strong enough to survive in a harsh and dangerous world."

It's a setup that should be familiar to anyone who played the 2018 God of War reboot, where the father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus formed the emotional core of the story.

The cast is nearly complete

Vinson's casting completes most of the major roles for the Norse mythology-focused series. The impressive ensemble includes Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.

Amazon also brought back Alastair Duncan to reprise his role as Mimir from the games, while adding Danny Woodburn as Brok and Jeff Gulka as Sindri. Notably absent so far are Freya and Baldur, both crucial to the original game's story.

The Prime Video series currently has no release date, which isn't entirely surprising given the scale of the production. UAE viewers will be able to stream it on Prime Video when it eventually launches — the platform is available locally without regional delays for most original content.
