Fortnite V-Bucks Price Increase: Epic Cites Rising Costs

Fortnite's V-Bucks packs deliver less value from 19 March as Epic cuts quantities up to 20%. The popular Dhs 33 pack drops from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks, while Crew subscribers lose 200 monthly V-Bucks amid rising operational costs.

Fortnite V-Bucks Price Increase: Epic Cites Rising Costs

Epic Games is increasing V-Bucks prices in Fortnite from 19 March 2024, citing rising operational costs. The changes mean players will receive fewer V-Bucks for the same money across most paid packs, with the popular $8.99 tier dropping from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks. "The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we're raising prices to help pay the bills," Epic said in an official blog post.

What's changing with V-Bucks pricing

Starting 19 March, Epic is reducing V-Bucks quantities across all major pack tiers rather than increasing dollar prices. The $8.99 pack takes the biggest hit, dropping 20% from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks. The $22.99 tier falls from 2,800 to 2,400 V-Bucks (14% reduction), whilst the $36.99 pack drops from 5,000 to 4,500 V-Bucks (10% cut).

The only pack seeing a direct price increase is the smallest option: 50 V-Bucks now costs $0.99 instead of $0.49, doubling the price. Meanwhile, the largest $89.99 pack will offer 12,500 V-Bucks instead of 13,500, an 8% reduction.

Epic confirmed that existing V-Bucks gift cards will retain their printed values when redeemed, protecting players who've already purchased credit.

How Battle Pass and Fortnite Crew are affected

Battle Pass pricing is being reduced from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks, but completion rewards drop proportionally from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks. This maintains the self-funding nature of Battle Passes but eliminates the 500 V-Bucks bonus reward players previously earned.

Other passes see similar adjustments: the OG Pass drops from 1,000 to 800 V-Bucks, whilst Music Pass and Lego Pass both decrease from 1,400 to 1,200 V-Bucks. Fortnite Crew subscribers face the biggest impact, with monthly V-Bucks rewards cut from 1,000 to 800.

The changes ensure Battle Passes remain accessible whilst reducing the additional V-Bucks players could earn and save for cosmetic purchases.

Why Epic is raising prices now

Epic's justification centres on increased operational costs for maintaining Fortnite's infrastructure. The company has not detailed specific cost drivers but faces ongoing expenses including server maintenance, content development, and platform fees across multiple gaming systems.

According to Epic Games Store general manager Steve Allison, the Epic Games Store remains only "marginally profitable" despite PC players spending $1.16 billion on the platform last year. Low profit margins on third-party games and developer/publisher fees for weekly free games limit profitability.

While Statista estimates Epic generated $6.21 billion in gross revenue last year, the company clearly faces pressure to improve margins amid rising operational costs.
