Playground Games says the main story in Fable will take around 15–20 hours, with another 15–20 hours of side content and open-world exploration available for players who are not in a hurry to leave Albion.

The estimate came from associate game director Will Kennedy during a group Q&A attended by Polygon at Gamescom 2026. Kennedy described the game as having a defined main quest and a comparable amount of optional content, while its life systems are designed to continue beyond either.

The new Fable game is being developed by Playground Games as a reboot. The Fable game length estimate covers the main quest, while the story follows a hero whose village is turned to stone by a mysterious stranger. The story can be pursued at the player’s pace, with the open world allowing players to leave the main thread and spend time on jobs, relationships and exploration instead.

Fable game length: how long is the main story?

“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay. And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want,”

Will Kennedy, associate game director

That puts the Fable main story at roughly 15–20 hours. The developers have not given a fixed total for a completionist run, since the optional systems are built around how much time players want to spend in Albion.

Associate game director Craig Littler added that players can “literally play it forever” if they choose. It is a familiar promise from an open-world RPG, although this one comes with a reasonably clear answer for anyone who only wants to follow the plot.

Fable’s side content adds another 15–20 hours

The second 15–20-hour estimate covers side quests and open-world exploration rather than another campaign. Xbox Wire’s developer interview also describes the reboot’s open world, life systems and choice-driven structure. Players can visit settlements, take on work, build relationships and pursue the game’s life systems alongside the central story.

The two ranges should not simply be added together as a guaranteed 30–40-hour runtime. They describe separate parts of the game, and individual playthroughs will vary depending on how much optional content overlaps with the main quest.

Polygon reports that Fable is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X on February 27, 2027. The game was previously announced for Xbox Series X/S, PC and PlayStation 5, and will also be available through Xbox Game Pass.

An earlier Fable report on the game’s 1,000-plus NPCs covered the scale of its living world, while the release-date and Hayley Atwell reveal has more on the game’s cast and launch plans.
