Look, we all knew Hollywood would keep searching Tom Cruise’s back catalogue for another legacy sequel. The surprise is that Days of Thunder 2 has landed on Jonathan Levine as its potential director — which is either an inspired left turn or a fascinating experiment. Possibly both.
Levine is currently in talks rather than formally signed, so nobody should start waving the chequered flag just yet. Still, his involvement gives Paramount’s long-developing racing sequel its clearest creative direction so far.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, reporting that Levine is in talks to direct Cruise in the sequel. Cruise is attached to reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and produce the film.
Will Staples is writing the screenplay, while Jerry Bruckheimer is returning as a producer. No public logline has been revealed, leaving the plot, supporting cast, and precise shape of Cole Trickle’s return firmly under the bonnet for now.
The project also sits alongside Top Gun 3 in Cruise’s expanding franchise slate. Paramount clearly remains interested in revisiting Cruise vehicles with enduring audiences, although Days of Thunder brings a very different creative challenge from sending Maverick back into the sky.
Why is Jonathan Levine an interesting choice?
Jonathan Levine would be an unexpected but potentially smart director for a character-led racing sequel.
Levine’s previous films include 50/50, Warm Bodies, and Long Shot, a varied run spanning drama, romance, comedy, and genre filmmaking. That résumé does not immediately shout roaring engines and NASCAR spectacle, but it does suggest he can find personality inside a familiar format.
The original Days of Thunder was directed by Tony Scott and released in 1990, with Cruise playing a talented young stock car driver entering NASCAR with the help of an experienced crew chief. It became a popular NASCAR-themed film despite receiving mixed reviews on release.
A sequel can recreate the noise, speed, and competitive swagger. The harder job is finding a reason to return to Cole Trickle beyond the fact that Tom Cruise still looks convincing while moving at alarming speeds. Levine’s character-focused background could help answer that question, provided the negotiations result in a deal.
