Anthropic's Claude Code has launched Voice Mode for developers in March 2026, while the company's main Claude app soared to #1 on the US App Store amid a mass exodus from ChatGPT. As reported by TechCrunch, the shift follows Anthropic's refusal to partner with the Department of Defense on surveillance and autonomous weapons projects.
What is Claude Code's Voice Mode?
According to Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar, Claude Code's Voice Mode enables hands-free coding through spoken commands. The feature is currently available to 5% of users, with broader rollout planned for the coming weeks.
To activate Voice Mode, developers type `/voice` to toggle the feature, then speak commands like "refactor the authentication middleware." Claude Code processes the voice input and executes the requested coding task. This represents a significant evolution in how developers interact with AI coding assistants.
The thing is, Anthropic hasn't disclosed technical limitations or whether there are caps on voice interactions. It's also unclear if the feature was built with third-party voice AI providers like ElevenLabs, with whom Anthropic was reportedly in discussions.
Voice mode is rolling out now in Claude Code. It’s live for ~5% of users today, and will be ramping through the coming weeks.

Why are users switching from ChatGPT to Claude?
The mass migration stems from Anthropic's public refusal to allow the Department of Defense to use Claude AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. This ethical stance contrasts sharply with OpenAI's subsequent agreement with the Pentagon.
According to Sensor Tower data, ChatGPT uninstalls jumped 295% day-over-day on 28 February 2026, while Claude downloads surged 51% the same day. The backlash was immediate and measurable — ChatGPT's one-star reviews increased 775%, while five-star reviews dropped 50%.
Anthropic reported daily sign-ups hit record highs, with free users increasing over 60% since January and paid subscribers more than doubling this year. The company's revenue run-rate exceeded $2.5 billion in February, more than doubling since early 2026.
How to switch from ChatGPT to Claude
Users can export their ChatGPT data through Settings > Data Controls > Export Data. ChatGPT compiles chat history into text or JSON files and emails them to users. For a simpler approach, copy key conversations or ask ChatGPT to summarise your preferences and custom instructions.
In Claude, enable Memory through Settings > Capabilities, then start a new conversation with: "Here's some important context I'd like you to remember." Paste your exported data or summaries directly into the chat. Claude's memory feature works for both free and paid users.
For those making a complete break, delete ChatGPT memory through Settings > Personalization > Memory, then navigate to account management settings to delete the account entirely. Simply cancelling subscriptions doesn't remove stored data.
What this means for the AI market
This shift signals the first major competitive challenge to ChatGPT's dominance based on ethical positioning rather than pure technical capability. Claude's surge demonstrates that users increasingly value AI companies' ethical stances alongside performance metrics.
The controversy has created a clear divide in the AI industry. OpenAI researchers like Boaz Barak have stated that blocking mass domestic surveillance should be everyone's "personal red line." Meanwhile, hundreds of tech workers signed an open letter urging the DoD to withdraw its designation of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.
For developers specifically, the competition in AI coding tools remains fierce, with Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI all competing. However, Claude Code's voice capability and ethical positioning give it a distinct advantage in attracting developers concerned about their tools' potential military applications.
Claude availability and features
Claude offers both free and paid tiers globally, including in the UAE. The free version includes basic chat functionality and memory features, while Claude Pro provides priority access during peak times and higher usage limits.
Claude Code's Voice Mode is rolling out gradually, starting with 5% of users before broader availability. The feature works through web browsers and doesn't require separate app downloads. UAE developers can access the same features as global users, with no regional restrictions reported.
Unlike some AI services, Claude maintains consistent feature parity across regions, making it particularly attractive for UAE-based developers and businesses concerned about feature limitations.
