Jacksepticeye says the animated Bloodborne film now has a writer and a director, though he isn’t saying who they are yet. The YouTuber, whose real name is Seán McLoughlin, made the comments in an interview with IGN about his appearance as a target in Hitman. IGN pointed out that when the project was first announced more than six months ago, it had neither.
Sony Pictures announced the film at CinemaCon with McLoughlin attached as producer. It’s an R-rated animated feature co-produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, with Lyrical Media co-financing alongside Sony. No release date has been set.

McLoughlin told IGN the project is “much more along the pipeline” than it was at the announcement. He said the team has more of the story mapped out and people in place to make it, and that he hopes to share who’s involved, plus some story teases, “sooner than later”. IGN suggests The Game Awards in December or a gaming event next year as possible venues, but nothing has been scheduled. He described the job as fun but stressful, given the weight of the franchise, and said “we’re poised to have something really cool.”
Why animation, according to the producer
McLoughlin also contrasted the film with Alex Garland’s live-action Elden Ring, another FromSoftware adaptation. He estimated that a live-action Elden Ring would cost around $600 million and questioned whether that approach is sensible, given what animation can do. In his view, Bloodborne‘s otherworldly imagery suits animation better than live action in front of a green screen. He also expects the Elden Ring film to arrive first, so the team will watch what it does. He doesn’t want to lean on it much, because Victorian-style Yharnam and Elden Ring‘s world of gods and a mountain are so different in story.
His broader stance is that an adaptation shouldn’t simply replay the game. McLoughlin said he’s less interested in redoing the game’s plot than in telling new stories inside the same universe, citing Fallout and the recent Resident Evil film as examples. He added that he previously tried to adapt Soma. He also argued that the first question for any adaptation is why it exists, and that film should use its passive nature differently from a game’s interactivity.
For now, the update is a producer’s word, with no names, cast or timeline attached. Sony is building a slate of game adaptations, and some are further along: the Call of Duty movie, for instance, already has a release date. We’ll update this story when the Bloodborne writer and director are named.
Who is making the Bloodborne movie?
Sony Pictures, PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation are behind it, with Jacksepticeye as producer. A writer and director are reportedly attached, according to McLoughlin, but they haven’t been named.
When is the Bloodborne movie coming out?
There’s no release date. Sony announced the film at CinemaCon in April 2026, and McLoughlin has only said he hopes to share more announcements soon.
Will the Bloodborne movie be live action?
No. It’s an R-rated animated feature, unlike the live-action Elden Ring film being directed by Alex Garland.
