The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2025) was already close to the logical conclusion of a gaming laptop. Last year’s model combined an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU and a 240Hz Mini-LED display inside an enormous chassis that was never going to leave your desk willingly.
For 2026, Asus has somehow found more room to push. Those crazy freaks.
The Core Ultra 9 275HX has been replaced by the newer Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, while the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU remains at 175W. The Mini-LED also makes the jump from 1600p to a much sharper 3840 x 2400 resolution while retaining its 240Hz refresh rate. It now features more than 2,000 local-dimming zones, up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness and ROG’s new Nebula ELMB technology for improved motion clarity.
The more important upgrade, however, sits underneath all of that. Asus has fitted the Scar 18 with a 20% thicker vapour chamber, considerably larger fans and a redesigned heatsink arrangement. In Manual Mode, the laptop can push up to 320W of combined CPU and GPU power, which is an absurd amount of energy to pump through something you can technically place on your lap (don’t do it though, it’s already hot outside).

The 2026 Scar 18 is not a radical reinvention, then. It is a familiar machine with a much sharper screen, a newer processor and substantially more thermal headroom. The question is whether any of those changes produce a meaningfully better experience, or merely give an already excessive gaming laptop even larger numbers to boast about.

Design and Ports: A Desk Monster That Earns Its Excess
The ROG Strix Scar 18 remains an absolute unit of a laptop. It weighs around 3.7kg before you add the enormous 450W power adapter, making it more of a desktop PC that happens to fold than something you would want to carry around every day.

That is around 200g heavier than last year’s model, but the increase does not feel particularly noticeable. It has gone from heavy to heavier, which makes little practical difference. You can move it between rooms or take it somewhere occasionally, but commuting with it every day would require a large backpack, even bigger shoulders and a healthy spine.
Despite its size and visual excess, I still really like the way the Scar 18 looks. Between the per-key keyboard lighting, RGB strip surrounding the bottom of the chassis, and the AniMe Vision display on the lid, there is a lot going on. It could easily have looked like Asus dumped every gaming-laptop cliche into one machine and called it a day.

Somehow, it all works together. The lighting looks polished and cohesive rather than chaotic, while the clean off-black chassis stops it from becoming too loud when the RGB is turned off. It is clearly designed to live permanently on a gaming desk, and within that context, the unapologetically flashy aesthetic makes sense.
The lid is made from metal, while the keyboard deck and lower chassis use thick plastic. A full-aluminium body would have felt more luxurious, sure, but imagine how much heavier it would become? I don’t want to. The plastic deck does not feel cheap or flimsy, however. It is sturdy, with no concerning creaking or excessive flex during normal use. This thing is pricey, and it feels like one.
Both the metal lid and plastic keyboard deck catch fingerprints easily. The dark finish makes oils and smudges quite visible under direct light, but they wipe away without much effort using a microfibre cloth.

The AniMe Vision display remains embedded into the lid, with its LEDs shining through 8,522 precision-milled openings. Armoury Crate lets you display pre-made animations, text and custom images or GIFs, while Stealth Mode turns off the lighting when you want the laptop to appear slightly less eager for attention.
You obviously cannot see AniMe Vision while using the laptop, but that is beside the point. I quite liked leaving it enabled while the Scar 18 was plugged in. If the laptop is part of a visible gaming setup, or sitting behind you during a stream, it adds some welcome pop and personality to the machine.

Asus also retains the tool-less bottom panel introduced on the previous model, providing access to the memory, SSD slots and fans without needing a screwdriver. The two memory slots support up to 128GB of DDR5-6400 RAM, while the storage bays can accommodate up to 8TB of PCIe 5.0 storage in RAID 0.

The port selection is comprehensive and well suited to a laptop intended to replace a desktop. On the left are the power connector, 2.5Gb Ethernet, HDMI 2.1, two Thunderbolt 5 ports, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The right side houses two more USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, giving you enough conventional connections for a mouse, external keyboard and a few wireless receivers without immediately needing a hub. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The only notable omission is an SD or microSD card reader, which feels strange on a machine powerful enough to serve as a serious video-editing or content creation workstation.
Display and Speakers: A Gorgeous 4K Mini-LED, Forgettable Audio
The Scar 18 features an 18” ROG Nebula HDR Mini-LED display with a 3840 x 2400 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. It offers over 2,000 local-dimming zones, 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage, G-Sync, Dolby Vision and a claimed peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits. It also features Asus’ new Nebula ELMB technology, which uses 40 independent backlight-strobing zones to improve motion clarity.

The 4K resolution is a notable upgrade over the 2560 x 1600 panel on last year’s model, and the difference is quite visible on an 18” screen. Text, images and videos appear sharper, the Windows interface looks cleaner, and the added pixel density gives everything a crispness that suits a laptop this expensive.
Of course, running games at 3840 x 2400 also requires considerably more GPU power than 1600p. We will see how the RTX 5090 handles that in the benchmarks section, but for general use, higher resolution is always better, especially on a display of this size.
The image quality is gorgeous. Colours are vibrant and well-balanced without looking aggressively oversaturated, while the increased number of local-dimming zones allows the panel to render dark scenes and blacks quite convincingly. Games and movies look fantastic, with excellent contrast, strong colour separation and enough brightness to give highlights some proper impact.

HDR performance is equally impressive. The screen gets properly bright, but it also retains colour and detail rather than turning the entire image into an overexposed mess. Sunlight, flames, reflections and neon lighting stand out against darker surroundings, while shadow detail remains visible. Windows HDR did not introduce strange colour shifts or raised black levels during my time with the laptop, either.
However, this is still a Mini-LED panel, and blooming remains present. Blooming occurs because each local dimming zone controls a group of pixels rather than every pixel individually, causing light to spill around bright objects placed against dark backgrounds. You will notice it around things such as subtitles, the mouse pointer and bright interface elements in dark scenes.
Asus uses its Nebula HDR Engine to dynamically adjust the backlight and claims it reduces blooming by up to 25%. It certainly is not as egregious as on cheaper Mini-LED panels, but it has not been eliminated. The panel would need far more local-dimming zones to get closer to the pixel-level control of an OLED display.
The screen also uses Asus’ AGLR anti-glare and low-reflection coating, which the company claims reduces reflections by 55%. It worked well in my setup, where I was sitting directly in front of a large window and could still see the display clearly. Rather than reflecting a defined glare over the image, the coating diffuses incoming light, while the panel’s high brightness cuts through it without much trouble.
The display runs at 120Hz in Standard, Eco and Optimised GPU modes, with the full 240Hz available when the laptop is placed in Ultimate Mode through Armoury Crate. This did not bother me because 120Hz is more than enough to make Windows feel smooth, while also reducing unnecessary battery drain when the dedicated GPU is not required (and brother, will you need that!).
At 240Hz, motion looks clean and immediate. I noticed no visible ghosting, smearing or trailing, and G-Sync worked without introducing any tearing or stuttering. Asus’ Nebula ELMB can operate alongside G-Sync as well, unlike many traditional backlight-strobing implementations that require VRR to be disabled.

I would still choose OLED if given the option. Its perfect blacks and lack of blooming remain difficult to beat. But the Scar 18’s Mini-LED display gets considerably brighter than many laptop OLED panels, produces excellent colours, and does not leave burn-in lingering somewhere in the back of your mind. For most of my time with it, I did not miss OLED all that much.
The Scar 18 also includes a two-speaker system with Smart Amp-equipped woofers, Dolby Atmos and virtual 5.1.2-channel surround processing. Dolby Atmos includes tuned presets for games and movies, while Asus claims that its Smart Amp implementation can produce substantially louder output than conventional laptop speakers.
The actual speakers are less impressive than the display. They do not sound particularly thin, and the midrange is decent enough to keep voices clear during YouTube videos, calls and casual viewing. However, the bass lacks weight, the highs have limited detail, and there is not much stereo separation despite the laptop’s enormous chassis.
Volume is acceptable rather than powerful. The speakers remain clean when pushed higher, with no obvious distortion, harshness or rattling, but they cannot overpower the cooling fans when the laptop is running in its more aggressive performance modes. And those fans can become seriously loud.
I could watch a casual film using the speakers when I am too tired to put on a headset, and they are perfectly adequate for calls or background videos. For proper media consumption, music or gaming, however, you will want headphones or external speakers. For games in particular, it is a straight no.
Keyboard, Trackpad and Webcam: Two Wins and One Letdown
The Scar 18 uses a full-size chiclet keyboard with a dedicated numpad, 2mm of key travel, per-key RGB lighting and five programmable ROG hotkeys above the main deck. The keys feel soft but have a slight pop when pressed, which makes them satisfying to type on without becoming mushy. They are responsive enough for games, the keycaps are generously sized, the legends are clear, and the RGB shines through them nicely. Everything feels solid this time around, including the spacebar, which does not have the flimsy quality I noticed on last year’s model.

Despite squeezing in a full keyboard and numpad, the layout does not feel cramped. The trackpad sits slightly to the left rather than directly in the centre of the chassis, which would normally bother me, but it aligns well with the main typing area and remained comfortable to use. The five shortcut keys are useful for quickly accessing their assigned functions, and while they are hardly revolutionary, I would rather have them than not.

The trackpad was a pleasant surprise. I expected something fairly average on a laptop primarily designed to be used with a mouse, but it tracks smoothly, responds accurately to gestures and is easily clickable across most of its surface. I encountered no accidental drags, missed clicks or palm-rejection issues, while its large size makes navigating Windows comfortable. It is still not as precise or refined as a MacBook trackpad, which remains the undisputed king in this department, but I did not immediately feel the need to reach for a mouse during general use.

The Full HD IR webcam is considerably less impressive. Image quality is soft, lacks fine detail and struggles under poor lighting, making it merely functional for work calls. The inclusion of Windows Hello is welcome, but the camera itself is not something I would use for streaming, recording or any serious professional work. Gaming laptop manufacturers really need to start taking webcams more seriously; if someone is spending this much on a machine for both work and play, a decent camera should not feel like an unreasonable expectation.
Benchmarks and Performance: Fast, But Native 4K Needs DLSS
Our Scar 18 configuration packs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with 24GB of GDDR7 memory, 64GB of DDR5-6400 RAM and a 1TB PCIe 5.0 SSD. The CPU features 24 cores and 24 threads, with a max boost clock of 5.4GHz, while the GPU can draw up to 175W using NVIDIA Dynamic Boost.
It is important to establish that the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU is not a desktop RTX 5090 stuffed inside a smaller chassis. With 10,496 CUDA cores, it is closer in specification to the desktop RTX 5080, but even that comparison comes with a significant power disadvantage. The desktop card can draw up to 360W, while NVIDIA limits its top laptop GPU to 175W. That is still an enormous amount of power for a mobile chip, but the name can create expectations that the hardware cannot realistically meet.

In Geekbench 6, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus scored 3,253 in the single-core test and 22,861 in multi-core, while the RTX 5090 posted 241,215 in the GPU benchmark. Geekbench AI returned a score of 12,228. Compared with last year’s Scar 18, CPU performance has improved by roughly 8% in single-core and 13% in multi-core workloads, while GPU performance remains within the same broad range because both laptops use the same 175W RTX 5090.
The synthetic graphics results tell a similar story. The Scar 18 scored 6,543 in 3DMark Speed Way, 6,217 in Steel Nomad, 16,614 in Port Royal and 12,595 in Time Spy Extreme, with 78.44fps in the DirectX Raytracing test. These are healthy gains in most tests, but the more interesting story begins when you start playing games at the native 4K resolution.
Horizon Zero Dawn ran at 104fps, while Guardians of the Galaxy managed 126fps without ray tracing. Those are strong results, but both are older games. More demanding titles quickly demonstrate the cost of rendering over nine million pixels. Marvel Rivals averaged just 44fps at native Ultra settings, while Cyberpunk 2077 managed 49fps at Ultra, dropping to 23fps with RT Ultra and only 12fps with path tracing.
Black Myth: Wukong proved even tougher. With its resolution scale set to 90% and DLSS enabled (in Cinematic preset), the benchmark returned 32fps. Ray tracing dropped that to 14fps, while enabling frame generation brought it back up to 26fps. Even the most powerful laptop GPU available cannot brute-force every modern game at native 4K.
This does not mean the Scar 18 is underpowered. Last year’s model achieved considerably higher numbers because it was tested at 2560 x 1600, which asks the GPU to render less than half as many pixels. Horizon Zero Dawn, for example, falls from 161fps at 1600p to 104fps here, while Marvel Rivals drops from 84fps to 44fps. The performance difference is the price you pay for the sharper display.
Anyone planning to game at the native resolution will need to become comfortable with DLSS and Frame Generation. Cyberpunk 2077 reached 100fps at RT Ultra using DLSS Performance and MFG x2, while path tracing climbed from 12fps to 75fps. Marvel Rivals jumped from 44fps to 101fps using DLSS Quality and MFG x2.
There is always some additional input latency when generated frames are involved, and the effect becomes easier to feel as you move towards 3x or 4x generation. It is less noticeable with a controller, however, and at 2x the experience remained highly playable. You may occasionally notice HUD elements jittering or becoming garbled, but the main image generally holds together well. For demanding games, DLSS Balanced or Performance paired with MFG offers the most realistic path to smooth 4K gaming.
Fans, Heat and Battery: Impressively Cool, Seriously Loud
Keeping all of this hardware under control is a heavily redesigned cooling system. Asus has fitted a vapour chamber that is 20% thicker than last year’s, paired with a new sandwiched rear heatsink. The CPU and GPU fans are 43% taller and reportedly provide 91% more airflow, while the third auxiliary fan is also larger. Air enters through the bottom, sides and keyboard deck before being exhausted entirely through the rear.
The system works. The RTX 5090 remained at or below 65°C during gaming while consistently drawing around 173W, meaning Dynamic Boost was keeping it close to its max 175W limit. CPU temps were considerably higher as expected, generally hovering between 85°C and 95°C, but I noticed no thermal throttling, sudden clock drops or performance degradation during extended sessions.

More impressively, the keyboard deck remained cool. Asus deliberately pulls air through the keyboard, and I could feel cool airflow around the left side and WASD area. The palm rests never become uncomfortable or sweaty, making it possible to play for several hours without the chassis cooking your hands.
Naturally, none of this happens quietly. In Manual Mode, the fans produce a smooth rush of air without any irritating whine, but they are extremely loud. Loud enough to disturb other people in the room, and far louder than the built-in speakers can hope to overcome. Asus has successfully kept the laptop cool, but in Manual Mode, the Scar 18 sounds like it is preparing for take-off.
Battery life is around four hours at best using the Silent profile and Optimised GPU mode. That is enough to get some work done away from the charger in a pinch, but endurance is not the Scar 18’s strength. Then again, a 3.7kg laptop with a 450W adapter was never pretending to be particularly portable.
The Verdict
The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2026) is a superb desktop replacement, provided you have the coin to afford one. The 4K Mini-LED display is gorgeous, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090 Laptop GPU deliver excellent performance, and Asus’ redesigned cooling system keeps the GPU and keyboard deck remarkably cool even when the laptop is drawing close to its limits. The keyboard is satisfying, the trackpad is far better than expected, and its unapologetically excessive design comes together quite nicely.
The 4K display is also responsible for the laptop’s biggest compromise. The RTX 5090 Laptop GPU is powerful, but it is not really built to run current AAA games at 3840 x 2400 with every setting pushed to Ultra. Reaching a consistent 60fps will often require DLSS Balanced or Performance, MFG, or dropping the visual settings to High or even Medium. That is the price of having a considerably sharper screen, and whether the trade is worthwhile depends on what you value more: image quality or native performance.
At AED 29,999, the Scar 18 is predictably expensive. But everything is expensive these days, especially at this end of the gaming-laptop market. Buyers considering the Scar 18 probably already know what they are getting into.
If the sharper display, newer processor and vastly improved cooling matter to you, the 2026 model is the one to buy. Otherwise, last year’s Scar 18 remains a sensible alternative. Its 1600p screen is easier for the same RTX 5090 to drive, it delivers higher native frame rates, and it should now be available for less money. The new Scar 18 is an excellent machine, but its finest upgrade also prevents the GPU from showing its best side without some assistance from DLSS.
Should You Buy the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2026)?
Buy it if you want the most capable desktop replacement Asus currently sells and the AED 29,999 asking price does not frighten you off. The 4K 240Hz Mini-LED panel is the headline upgrade and it genuinely earns that billing, the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5090 Laptop GPU are quick, and the redesigned cooling keeps both the GPU and the keyboard deck under control without throttling. Go in knowing that the display is also the compromise, though: the RTX 5090 cannot brute-force modern AAA games at 3840 x 2400, so DLSS and Frame Generation become part of the deal rather than an optional extra. If native frame rates matter to you more than pixel density, last year’s 1600p Scar 18 is the smarter buy and should now cost less.
