What Is Cape Fear About?
Cape Fear follows happily married attorneys Anna and Tom Bowden, whose comfortable life detonates when Max Cady — the convicted murderer they helped put behind bars — walks out of prison and starts methodically inserting himself into their family. He’s not after a quick confrontation. He’s had years to plan, and the series is far more interested in the creeping dread of a dangerous man circling your life than in cheap jump scares.
This is the third major screen take on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, following the 1962 film with Robert Mitchum and Scorsese’s own 1991 version with Robert De Niro. That’s an intimidating lineage, but the series format gives creator Nick Antosca (The Act, Brand New Cherry Flavor) room the films never had — ten episodes to let Cady’s psychological warfare unfold slowly, and to dig into the moral compromises that put him away in the first place.
Javier Bardem steps into the Cady role, which is about as inspired as villain casting gets. The man who made a coin toss terrifying in No Country for Old Men now gets an entire season to unsettle you. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson play the Bowdens, a couple whose polished exterior starts cracking under pressure, while CCH Pounder and Jamie Hector round out a supporting cast with serious pedigree.
The Spielberg and Scorsese executive-producer credits are more than marketing garnish — this is a prestige production through and through, and one of Apple TV’s bigger swings of 2026.
