The romantic drama series about three friends living in the scenic town of Serenity, South Carolina, is back for a third instalment. Based on the series of novels by Sherryl Woods, the show was adapted for television by Sheryl J. Anderson, whose previous work includes the supernatural drama, Charmed (also about three women, but with magical powers instead of the power of lifelong friendship).

Sweet Magnolias season 3 review
- Convincing performances
- Relatable drama
- Endearing characters
- Melodramatic
- Slow-burner
Last we saw the three protagonists, they were each at a crossroads and feeling threatened by the arrival of a mysterious woman who appeared out of nowhere spouting venom about Dana Sue. This complication couldn’t have come at the worst time, as Dana Sue has just received a hefty inheritance and decided to give her marriage with Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) another try.
Maddie was left to deal with the aftermath of a bar fight involving her romantic interest, Cal (Justin Bruening), which ended with him in handcuffs. She had just started to get over the divorce from her cheating husband, Bill (Chris Klein), and even seemed to make amends with the woman he cheated with, Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears).

Helen (Heather Headley) received a surprise marriage proposal from her ex, Ryan, who appears to have a change of heart about his no-baby stance. Of course, Helen had already started a serious relationship with her Chef, Erik (Dion Johnstone), who’s very much on board with supporting her desire to have children.
While the first two seasons did a great job at developing the world these three women inhabit and their relationships with those around them, they’re all faced with bigger challenges this season. Maddie needs to assess her new romantic relationship with Cal, especially as his anger problem caused her embarrassment. Helen’s love for Ryan appears to have blinded her to the reason the two weren’t compatible in the first place. And Dana Sue has to face a vengeful force from the past while deciding what to do with the money dearly departed Aunt Francis left her.

As this is Sweet Magnolias, the season is filled with intertwined storylines for those around the three protagonists. The coming-of-age romantic drama happening in the teenagers’ lives, Annie (Anneliese Judge) and Ty (Carson Rowland), is particularly heartwarming. While the relationship between Ty’s ex, CeCe (Anneliese Judge ), and Annie takes an unexpected turn.
While season 3 is better than the show’s second instalment, it struggles to shake that daytime soap feel. It can get melodramatic, and some plot points are dragged into oblivion. We get an endless stream of emotional moments and chilled-out conversations. Nothing happens, the characters simply glide through their day-to-day lives while contemplating said life.

That’s not to say this isn’t a perfectly enjoyable drama. While it’s nowhere near the calibre of other Netflix originals like Firefly Lane, Sweet Magnolias offers relaxing entertainment and low-stake wholesomeness. This is probably why the show is so popular in the midst of a hectic world; it slows things down.
