The Act

This true crime eight-episode series tells the real story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the circumstances that led her to murder her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. In the series, Gypsy uses a wheelchair due to an illness she had growing up and wishes to be independent of her overprotective mother. But their relationship turns sour as her mother becomes more controlling and abusive towards her as she starts to rebel against her.

It becomes even more toxic when Gypsy discovers that she is never ill and that her mother only fabricated the disease and managed to deceive her friends and family. It was soon revealed that Dee Dee suffered from a factitious disorder imposed on another, a type of mental illness where a caregiver can fake or even exaggerate the sickness of a person they care for. I, Tonya

Considered a “biographical sports mockumentary”, this film tells the life and career of American figure skater Tonya Harding. Loosely incorporating actual events, the movie looks at her life before she began her professional career as the daughter of an abusive mother to her marriage to an abusive husband.

Despite being one of the best figure skaters in the world, she is often held back due to her “white trash” reputation, thanks to her mother. It also gives the viewers Tonya’s side of the 1994 Winter Olympics assault on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan.

The film shines on the life of an athlete who rises and falls from fame and often does other jobs if they can’t compete professionally. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Julianne Nicholson, Bobby Cannavale and Allison Janney. A critically-acclaimed hit, the film saw Allison Janney win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, with a Best Actress nomination for Margot Robbie.
