Only Murders in the Building season 3 review
- Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd
- Quirky humour
- Engaging story
- Broadway
- Too little focus on the murder investigation
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez reprise their roles as Charles-Haden, Oliver, and Mabel, respectively. Last we saw the three true crime partners, they were attending Oliver’s new Broadway play when the lead actor suddenly collapsed on stage.

At the start of season three, we learn that the play’s star, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), died on stage, but medical personnel were able to revive him. In true Broadway fashion, Ben storms into the opening night afterparty, now turned into a sombre event by his supposed passing.
He has some words for his fellow cast members, including his understudy Jonathan (Jason Veasey), his love interest Kimber (Ashley Park), co-lead Ty (Gerald Caesar), and even Charles, with whom he’s had bad blood since the first table read.
And then Ben dies (for real), having fallen dozens of stories down Arconia’s elevator shoot.

On top of feeling compelled to solve the mystery of who killed poor Ben, our leads also have new personal challenges to face. Mabel’s aunt has sold the apartment she’s been living in, so the young woman needs to figure out a new living arrangement.
Charles is laden with guilt over how he treated Ben and other aspiring actors during his heyday as a successful household name. And Oliver is desperate to convince his producers not to cancel the play that was supposed to be his big return to Broadway. He’s also facing serious health concerns and is starting to develop an attraction to Loretta Durkin (played by none other than Meryl Streep), a struggling actress he hired for the play.
Delightfully charming comedy-mystery
Only Murders in the Building works because it’s well-written and has an incredibly talented cast behind it. It’s also a show with a lot of heart. While the characters are quirky, they never fall into the trap of becoming two-dimensional characters. They’re real people with flaws, hopes, and dreams, and watching them interact on screen is delightful.

While we only see Meryl Streep for a few brief scenes in the first couple of episodes, she steals the spotlight in every frame she’s in. I can only commend the ironic genius of casting one of the most talented women in the movie business as a struggling actress. It will be interesting to see where the shows take the Loretta character and her growing romance with Oliver.
Season three of Only Murders in the Building is the most thrilling yet. Not only has the show retained its charming wit and humour, but the overarching mystery is gripping, and the characters feel more real than ever.
